For a while now, rumors have been circulating that Steve Burton was leaving General Hospital. It turns out the rumor is true, just not exactly how it was originally reported.
Burton announced on Instagram that he will be taking a temporary break from the show and explained the reason behind his decision.
“Hey everyone, I wanted to share that I’ll be taking a short break from General Hospital. I’m newly married and looking forward to spending some quality time with my family. I’m grateful for all the support and will be back this summer.”
So while Jason Morgan fans can breathe a little easier, this is still a significant pause for the longtime GH favorite and for those who were enjoying his storyline with Kelly Thiebaud’s Britt Westbourne.
Steve Burton’s History of Stepping Away from Soaps
This is not the first time Burton has taken a break from General Hospital. In fact, he has played Jason Morgan since 1991 and has exited the show multiple times over the years for various reasons.
During one of those breaks, Burton reprised his Days of Our Lives role as Harris Michaels from 2023 to 2024. During another hiatus, he joined The Young and the Restless, where he played Dylan McAvoy, the son of Nikki Newman and Paul Williams, from 2013 to 2017. He even won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2017 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his work on Y&R.
Throughout his GH tenure, Burton has received multiple Emmy nominations and previously won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 1998 for his portrayal of Jason Morgan.
A Newlywed Focusing on Family
It was on May 17, 2025, that Burton married Michelle Lundstrom after announcing their engagement earlier in January. The couple often shares life updates on Instagram, and according to Burton’s announcement, he wants to focus on spending quality time with his family before returning to Port Charles later this summer.
So while Jason Morgan may be off-screen for now, it looks like this exit is only temporary.
