Tunie is no stranger to the soap world, but after being absent from the genre for about 14 years, her return in February was just what we, and soap fans alike, needed.
For longtime soap fans, Tunie is remembered as Jessica Griffin on As the World Turns, a role she played from 1987 to 2007, with a brief return in 2009. She also made brief appearances on Days of Our Lives in 2011 as Judge Weston. So yes, she knows this genre inside and out, and it shows.
What Happened with Anita on Beyond the Gates?
This month, her BTG alter ego, Anita Dupree, was hit with the kind of news no one ever wants to hear. After a round of tests, doctors confirmed she has Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.
It was a gut punch, no doubt, and the show did not shy away from that reality. During this obviously tough time, Anita leaned on her girls, Sharon and Tracy, as she tried to wrap her head around what was happening. Not long after, she told her husband, Vernon Dupree, who has never left her side.
Naturally, Anita was scared. Anyone would be. And while it was not necessarily framed as a death sentence, she knew exactly what she was up against. So, she understood the road ahead would be tough. Still, she made it clear she was ready to face it head-on.
What really made these scenes stand out was how Tunie played them. She did not need big speeches or screaming antics. Sometimes she said nothing at all. A look, a pause, tears building in her eyes while she processed the news. You could feel every emotion she was going through. That’s talent. That kind of acting stays with you.
