It’s always a blast when primetime television gives a nod to our favorite daytime worlds! Shows across network TV love to tip their hats to the enduring power of soap operas, proving that no matter how much prestige TV tries to shine, nothing beats the addictive, fast-moving joy of five episodes a week. ABC’s Abbott Elementary just delivered an absolute treat for daytime fans by poking fun at its very own network companion, General Hospital.

Set in the teachers’ lounge, the scene finds the staff completely absorbed in a soap opera storyline. Lesson plans and grading can wait. There’s a dramatic reveal to watch, and apparently, nobody wants to miss it. Certainly not Melissa!

Melissa Defends Soap Operas

When one teacher tries to quiet the room so she can watch her “stories,” the conversation turns to whether soap operas are still worth watching.

Melissa isn’t having any criticism of her favorite genre.

“People with taste. Like me,” she fires back. She notes that soaps have everything—endless plots, schemes, and five new episodes every single week.

She even points out, “These are the hardest-working actors in show business. They’re like the teachers of Hollywood.” Truer words have never been spoken!

Gregory, however, isn’t completely convinced.

“Hmmm, I don’t know about all that,” he mutters.

Naturally, the debate only makes the scene funnier for viewers who know exactly how addictive a good soap storyline can be.

Of course, the moment gets even better when Janine walks in and immediately roasts them. “Are you guys seriously sitting here watching soap operas? Wow. You are elementary school teachers. You should know better,” she says.

But naturally, just moments later, Janine gets totally sucked into the drama. “So where’s real Nathan, and who plays him?” she asks. “Same actor,” the collective room replies in unison—a hilarious parody echoing legendary General Hospital plot twists where Nathan West turns out to be his twin brother Cassius Faison!

Identical twins, secret family connections, and mistaken identities have been part of daytime storytelling for decades, and even the ongoing mob warfare! In fact, the episode even saw the teachers talking about the whole Sonny versus Sidwell drama going down in Port Charles. Make sure to watch the episode for yourself if you haven’t yet!

About Abbott Elementary

For those unfamiliar, Abbott Elementary is Quinta Brunson’s Emmy-winning mockumentary sitcom about dedicated Philadelphia public school teachers. Seeing them pause their workday to obsess over secret twins and daytime tropes was a perfection-level homage to the hard-working world of daytime drama.
