Beyond the Gates has done it again. The CBS daytime drama delivered its second major death since premiering in February 2025 and, in the process, its third major casting shake-up. Fans tuned in anxiously after Tuesday’s cliffhanger episode left several characters fighting for their lives. In the May 20 episode, one of Fairmont Crest’s beloved residents sadly met his end, and it was none other than Derek Baldwin.
That also means Ben Gavin, who was dropped from contract to recurring at the start of season two, has officially exited the series.
The Warehouse Showdown Turned Deadly
In the episode, residents across the DMV gathered for the highly anticipated Cotillion night as Samantha Richardson-Smith was crowned platinum deb.
While it should have been a joyful night for the Duprees and the rest of the town, things took a devastating turn elsewhere.
Jacob’s undercover mission finally reached a breaking point when he, Lia, Grayson, and Derek found themselves at the center of a dangerous warehouse showdown.
Jacob had spent months undercover — going by the name of “Rashad” — trying to uncover the truth behind the plasma ring and the people running it.
Although the identity of the impaler still hasn’t been revealed, the investigation made major progress. Unfortunately, it also left several people seriously injured and one man dead.
Ashley Learns the Truth
Jacob, Grayson, Derek, and Lia were all rushed to the hospital after the confrontation. Derek, however, had lost far too much blood.
In one of the episode’s quietest but most emotional scenes, it became painfully clear that Derek didn’t survive.
Ashley noticed a surgeon speaking with Shanice and instantly sensed something was wrong. Moments later, Shanice looked over at Ashley with heartbreak written all over her face. Ashley then broke down in tears as she realized Derek was gone.
It not only hit Ashley hard, but everyone present, Jacob, Shanice, Grayson, and Naomi, was all heartbroken.
