Beyond the Gates spoilers for September 8 tease that Articulette Anita articulates a mouthful to Leslie, Jacob and Naomi’s work paths take them to different places, and the Johnson brothers arrive in the DMV to eat – er, meet – Ted.

Ted’s first encounter with his beloved’s brothers hits a snag through no fault of his own, and the Hawthornes evaluate their priorities. Elsewhere in D.C., Leslie’s demand for a producer credit on the Articulettes record gets her in record-breaking hot water with the Anita Williams!

If one had to apply an adjective to Jacob’s (Jibre Hordges) approach toward his career, it’s “dedicated.” He’s willing to throw himself in whole hog, whether that’s investigating Leslie (Trisha Mann-Grant) or finding Chelsea’s (RhonniRose Mantilla) kidnapper (not that Kat didn’t have better luck with both).

Now with The Impaler rearing his — make that her — ugly head again, Jacob’s instinct is to live his plan to avenge Derek 24-7, though here he will realize that he has a wife, parents, and brothers to consider as well. Which consideration will tip the scales for the Boy Scout detective this time?

Meanwhile, Naomi (Arielle Prepetit) doesn’t exactly escape the label of “workaholic” herself – and one would guess it’s more than that extended family that has her coming to Smitty’s (Mike Manning) rescue. Only question is, what has Smitty done this time?

It has to be something that will tick Jacob off, so…did the reporter go and question someone on Jacob’s no-no list again? Is Smitty about to get intel on The Impaler that Jacob couldn’t find? Or will Naomi have to run interference with Jacob because he discovers that she and Smitty knew that Kenneth was the body in the park? (It’s been over a year since that shared secret, but don’t think we’ve forgotten.)

Pump Up The Jam

When Leslie last met with The Articulettes, she told them she’d be happy to give them the permission they needed to mix long-lost mama Barbara’s archived vocals into their updated recordings…as long as she got a big fat producer credit for all the world to see.

Anita (Tamara Tunie) wasn’t about it, and Leslie told Vernon (Clifton Davis) that his wife better shape up if she wanted Barbara to posthumously appear on the new album. Now Anita is making her next move, and it’s gonna be Battle of the Divas in the DMV. Will the legendary performer tell Leslie to stick it where the sun don’t shine, or will she surprise all of us by making some sort of compromise for the sake of the project?

Then there’s that other project of Leslie’s — we think. You see, it’s not like Leslie didn’t just happen to overhear Ted (Keith D. Robinson) and Shanice (Ernestine Johnson) talking about her Teddy Bear’s upcoming meeting with Shanice’s brothers: Cedric (Khiry Walker) and Lamont (Denzell Dandridge).

Their endorsement will certainly go a long way in Shanice’s eyes…so what better way to jack up Shanice’s relationship with Ted than to turn her bros against him? Something’s about to go awry, because “sabotage” is the word that’ll get thrown around regarding this testosterone-filled tête-à- tête once all is said and done.

If Leslie’s attempt to split Thanice (Shed?) with a pair of panties didn’t work, surely she’s ready to level up in her next round by talking smack about Ted to his would-be brothers-in-law!
