Sometimes soap fans are the absolute best and then there are times when a few folks forget that fiction is, well, fiction. A perfect example popped up recently involving Cameron Mathison, who has been catching heat not just for his General Hospital alter ego Congressman Drew Cain, but personally too.
Unfortunately, that wave of hate didn’t just reach Cameron. His daughter, Leila Mathison, saw it for herself and it clearly hit her hard. So much so that Cameron took to Instagram to shine a little light on what happened.
Here’s What Happened
In his post, Mathison shared that he was on a recent FaceTime call with Leila. What should have been a simple father daughter catch up took a sharp left turn when she mentioned watching a compilation of Drew’s darker moments. It wasn’t the clips that rattled her the most, though. It was the harsh comments aimed directly at her dad.
Mathison caption explains, “Leila FaceTimed me after watching a YouTube compilation of some of my character Drew Cain‘s darker scenes on General Hospital.”
Mathison goes on to say, “At first, she was troubled by how despicable my character was, but then after reading the comments with so much hate and aggression towards me she needed to FaceTime and talk it out.”

Cameron Mathison shares, “Just posting this as a gentle reminder that when we make comments on social media, these people have kids and families and friends and are real people. Remember everyone, it’s just a character and I’m just doing my job. I love my job and I’m so grateful for all the support that I’ve got through the years believe me. But maybe this post will help keep in mind that there’s other things to consider.”
Of course it’s easy to understand why people don’t exactly warm up to Drew’s character—half of Port Charles can’t stand him either.
He’s racked up plenty of reasons for folks to side-eye him, including that little incident where he basically left Ned to die during a heart attack. Sure, in Drew’s defense, he thought Ned was faking it… but still, not a great look.
That said, viewers need the occasional reminder that it’s not okay to unleash real-life hate on the actors behind these fictional messes. They’re just doing their jobs, and if everyone in soap land were an angel, the show would be flatter than week-old soda.
Those nasty comments aimed at actors can seriously affect them and their families, and it’s just not worth it.
Leila Gets New Perspective
Thankfully, Mathison’s Instagram post seemed to get Leila singing a slightly different tune. In the comments she shared, “This comment section restored my faith in the Gh watchers!! Also this video is not my best angle just have to fend for myself”
The post also had several of Cameron Mathison’s colleagues jumping into the comments to back him up. It was like the GH cast rolled in as his personal cheer squad.
