Maurice Benard‘s (Sonny Corinthos, General Hospital) YouTube serial continues to be a powerful place for actors and stars to open up about their lives in a way they would not normally do. The latest installment features Benard’s GH co-star Cameron Mathison (Drew Cain), who talked about his time as Ryan Lavery on All My Children. He also spoke about the recent losses in his life, including the loss of his home due to the Califronia Wildfires in January. Their deep talk was very impactful and you will see why.

Mathison Talks the Losses

Cameron Mathison has had very challenging and sorrowful years recently. Opening up on State of Mind, he stated, “Essentially, the last year in a bit — as you know, cancer — my mom had cancer and she passed away. Then COVID happened and somebody very, very, very, very near, one of the most important people in my life, went through a life-threatening drug scare and addiction. That was incredibly hard and scary.”

He added, “And then I lost my job at [Hallmark’s] Home and Family that got cancelled. Then after that, my wife of 22 years and I — it just — things really started falling apart in a very kind of, you know, challenging and hurtful way. Then eventually separation and going through divorce and then my dog got cancer and became paralyzed and eventually passed away and then my kids moved out for college.

Mathison’s House Burned Down

And then I pull up on January 8th to our house in Altadena. This beautiful 4,500-foot house that I’ve had built and cherished and renovated and my kids were raised in. Every piece of evidence of my life and their life was in, and it was burning to the ground. And it’s gone. In that moment, I had lost, you know, my marriage. I’d lost my dog, my house, my possessions, and my childhood, and I’d lost my mom.”

Fighting to hold back the tears, Cameron noted, “This has been really hard. It’s an interesting and hard-to-explain type of loss. Like, it’s very bizarre to explain to people that haven’t been through it.”

Cameron Mathison’s strength and resilience continue to be a testament to the type of man he is. Watch the full interview below!
