Stuart Damon played the character of Dr. Alan James Quartermaine Sr. on General Hospital on and off from 1977 to 2013. He is known for his marriages to Monica Bard Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson) and Lucy Coe (Lynn Herring) and his turbulent relationship with his sister, Tracy Quartermaine (ex-Jane Elliot). Alan has 3 sons; AJ Quartermaine (ex-Sean Kanan), Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) and Andrew Cain (Billy Miller) and two adopted daughters; Emily Quartermaine (ex-Natalia Livingston) and Skye Quartermaine (ex-Robin Christopher).
Dr. Quartermaine was Chief of Staff at General Hospital. Throughout his time in Port Charles, Alan was involved in some unforgettable storylines, such as being led to believe by his sister Tracy that his son AJ /Alan Quartermaine Jr was not his son and had planned revenge only to learn later that AJ was indeed his son. He was seduced into bed by one Lucy Coe who claimed she was pregnant with his child when, in fact, it was Scott Baldwin’s child. After the character’s passing, another story involved Alan making ghostly appearances to haunt his sister after she had forged his will to leave everything to her when, in fact, it was his son Jason and his children that were to get shares in his estate.
In addition to the usual soap stories of affairs, out of wedlock children, family feuds and murder plots, the show also covered some topical subjects, not usually found on daytime, as the Quartermaine’s faced some real-life situations. Alan stood by Monica as she faced breast cancer. The couple adopted their daughter Emily after her mother, Monica’s friend, passed away from cancer. They covered domestic violence, addiction to pain pills, traumatic brain injuries, sexual harassment, the teenage drug issue, and menopause.
