Spoilers for Days of Our Lives on August 29, 2023: Shawn hits rock bottom. Paulina’s news impacts Rafe and Jada. Steve gives Abe advice on next steps with Paulina. Brady learns Philip is alive.
Days of Our Lives Episode Recap August 29, 2023: Belle & Philip Are Reunited
Belle leaves another message for Shawn, begging him to call her. She tells Marlena that she’s been trying to get in touch with him and doesn’t know where he is. At the Salem PD, Shawn mutes Belle’s messages and says that he’s sorry as he stares at the gun on his desk and then picks it up tearfully.
Belle tells Marlena that her plan was stupid and made things worse. Marlena comforts her and tells her that she is trying to help. Belle asks Marlena to tell her what he talked about in therapy but Marlena tells her that she can’t break confidentiality. Belle reminds her that she can if she thinks Shawn is a danger to himself or others and asks her if she thinks that. Marlena admits that she is concerned. Belle begs her to tell her what he said in therapy and Marlena agrees to.
Paulina goes to Shawn’s office and tells him that she hopes he can understand that she is giving Rafe his job back. He tells her that he’s glad Rawlings is gone and tells her about him wanting Shawn to arrest her for assault. He also tells her that he told Rawlings that he wouldn’t use police resources for his vendettas and Paulina thanks him. She tells him that he is a good man and a good officer and she wants him to stay on as a Detective. Paulina explains that she just thinks reinstating Rafe is the right thing to do.
Shawn agrees that it’s the right thing to do and Paulina thanks him for being so gracious. Before she leaves she asks if he is sure he’s ok and he tells her that he’s fine and that he thinks she will be a great mayor. Belle doesn’t understand why Shawn backslid when he was making real progress. Marlena tells her that he was but that he felt it wouldn’t help Bo or Victor so it was pointless.
Marlena tells Belle that Shawn is hitting rock bottom but that could be what he needs to do before he can start to get better. Belle is terrified of what he might do while at rock bottom. At the PD, Shawn takes the gun out of his desk and looks at it again. Belle is about to go to the PD to try to get help finding Shawn when he walks into Marlena’s office and sets his gun down. He asks her to take it away from him because he’s not in a good place.
Marlena asks if he was thinking about hurting himself and he tells her that he doesn’t know but he knows that he needs help. Marlena and Belle tell him that they will help him in any way he needs. Marlena tells him that she wants to put him on a 24-hour hold and he agrees to comply. She suggests that they talk for a bit first and Belle kisses him before leaving to give them privacy.
Shawn apologizes to Marlena and tells her that quitting therapy was a mistake. She tells him that she understands and she will do everything she can to help him. She reminds him that they are family and she loves him. He tells her that he loves her too before hugging her.
Jada comes home after work and is surprised by how clean her room is. Rafe comes out of the bathroom, holding cleaning supplies and she asks him if he cleaned and he tells her that he can’t just sit around watching Body & Soul all day. Rafe makes them each a margarita and they cuddle on the bed and they drink them. He tells her that he used to be a bartender and they joke around before making love.
Jada and Rafe go downstairs to the Pub for dinner and Paulina interrupts them and offers Rafe his job back. Paulina tells them that she told Shawn already and that he is going to stay on as a Detective. Rafe brings up the fraternization policy and Paulina tells him that she is going to amend that policy so it goes case by case. Rafe tells her that he wants to wait until the policy is gone before making a decision. He tells her that he doesn’t want to end things with Jada. Paulina promises to get it done pronto.
After Paulina leaves Jada tells Rafe that she thinks he should take the job. He tells her that they would have to stop seeing each other and she says it would only be until the policy changes. Rafe tells her that he doesn’t know if he wants his job back but he is sure that he is falling in love with her.
Steve hands Abe a beer and sits next to him on the couch before telling him to turn on the next episode of Body & Soul. Abe is confused when Steve mutes the TV during a commercial but figures out that he did it because it was a commercial for a supplement to help with memory and he thought it could upset him. Abe confesses that he asked Kayla about the supplement and she told him that it wouldn’t work on amnesia. Abe is baffled as to why nothing is coming back to him.
Steve turns off the TV after their show is interrupted by a news break announcing Paulina as the new mayor and Abe talks about how confident he is that she will do a good job. Steve points out that Abe and Paulina have a lot of faith in each other and tells Abe that Paulina really loves him. Abe tells him that it kills him that he can’t remember loving her. Steve encourages Abe to try to get close to her again. He suggests that Abe start at the beginning and date her.
Steve shares with Abe about what happened between him and Kayla when he had amnesia and how they worked their way back to each other. Abe asks if he thinks it can happen for him and Steve tells him that he does. He suggests that he get to know Paulina again and says that he bets that even if he never remembers he will fall in love with her again.
Paulina stops by to tell Abe about offering Rafe his job back. Abe is happy and thanks her. She turns to leave but Abe stops her and asks her to go on a date with him. Paulina happily agrees.
Brady is shocked to see Philip when he opens the door but quickly grabs him and hugs him, thrilled that he is alive. Brady assumes that Kristen kidnapped Philip and faked his death to frame him for Philip’s murder. He wants to use it to appeal the custody ruling. Chloe tells him that Kristen didn’t do it and Philip admits that it was him.
Philip tells Philip every detail about what he did and tries to explain that he was crazy with jealousy and out of his mind. He asks Brady if he can forgive him and Brady punches him, knocking him to the floor. Brady is furious and demands to know where he’s been. Philip tells him that he has been in a mental institution getting help and is very sorry for everything he did and will do whatever it takes to make amends.
Brady pulls out his phone to call the police and Chloe stops him, begging him to not do this right now. She tells him that Philip was mentally ill and asks him to have compassion. She also reminds him that Philip just lost his father. Brady sarcastically says that Victor would be so proud of him and Philip tells him that Victor and Kate were the ones who sent him to the institute.
Brady can’t believe everything that they let him do trying to clear his name and find out what happened to Philip and says that Philip has to go down for everyone he hurt with his actions. Chloe pleads with him to let Philip try to make it right, for Victor. She asks him to think about Maggie too and Brady heads for the door. Chloe asks what he’s going to do and Brady tells her that he doesn’t know and has to think about it.
After Brady leaves Chloe tells Philip that she thinks he will realize he was ill and not turn him in. Philip tells her that the truth is going to come out either way and he needs a lawyer. She suggests Belle but Philip points out that Brady is her brother. Chloe reminds him that she is also his friend.
Belle knocks on Chloe’s door and Chloe thanks her for coming. Belle assumes Chloe called because Xander needs a lawyer but Chloe tells her that it’s not for Xander and opens the door more so Belle can see Philip. She rushes over and hugs him happily and tells him that she’s so happy to see him. Philip says he hopes she still feels that way after she finds out what he did. At the PD Brady goes into the commissioner’s office and leaves a note for Shawn to call him.
