General Hospital fans got a delightful surprise when Maurice Benard (Sonny) hosted his YouTube show, State of Mind, and reunited with Drew Garrett, who played his on-screen son, Michael Corinthos. The episode kicked off with Garrett sharing tales from his childhood before diving headfirst into the story of his skin condition that almost took a toll on his mental health. While he is pretty level mentally, he admits that he’s had challenges, physical health challenges that have put his mental state in a place of deep reflection and sensitivity.
He admitted that he faced some epic physical health challenges due to an autoimmune condition—eczema—starting when he was just a child. Back then, he was blissfully clueless about anything health-related. However, a trip to the dermatologist resulted in a prescription for topical steroids, which worked like magic until they didn’t.
He discovered he was not just battling eczema but also knee-deep in a steroid addiction. Realizing he needed a new game plan, he took a long, hard look at his diet, lifestyle, and the products lurking in his home.
Quitting steroids was no picnic; it felt like a firestorm erupted on his skin, and he was left looking like he just survived a battle with a swarm of angry bees—eyes swollen shut and as red as ever.
Drew explained that he was on steroids all throughout his General Hospital run. However, towards the tail end of his run on GH, he started trying to get off them, and that led to a decade-long crusade.
Drew Garrett Talks Skin Condition
Garrett said he banished every toxin, preservative, and processed food that dared to cross his path. He had to essentially clean house. He said, “I wasn’t able to identify what the triggers were because I was dealing with steroid withdrawal; it’s called topical steroid withdrawal, TSW, and it’s real. If you look it up online, people are out there looking like burn victims trying to get off these.”
He learned the enemy was lurking in grains, dairy, and eggs and became the food police for himself. Drew Garrett said, “I’m a pretty happy dude, but during those times, that was one of the only times I thought to myself, I can relate to people who feel like they might just want to end it.“
Through the tough moments, his mindset was as tested as his patience, but he emerged like a champ, realizing that addressing health at its core is far better than slapping on a band-aid and calling it a day! Garret also spoke about his audition for GH. Check out the full interview below!
