Angels are still among us! The news is inundated with bad news these days, so we are excited to share this story! Eddie Alderson, known in the entertainment industry for his portrayal of Matthew Buchanan (2001-2012) on One Life to Live, is now an Amtrak police officer (also a former EMS medic) and a real-life hero and angel.
Officer Alderson was the first to arrive on the scene in response to a call for help from the 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, PA. Upon arrival, Alderson saw a motionless man lying on the café cart floor. The conductor, Steven Smart, was experiencing a medical emergency, later diagnosed as a heart attack.
Alderson, with an automatic electric defibrillator or AED, in hand, began administering life-saving CPR to an unconscious Smart. In time, Alderson was able to feel a slight pulse and kept Smart alive until the EMS arrived.
Eddie Alderson Recounts the Harrowing Events

While recounting the harrowing events, Alderson said this,”I was right on top of him doing CPR, and then it stays shock advised, so then I have to jump back. I’m straddling. Trying not to touch his body. It was scary.”
The doctors told Smart’s wife that if he made it, he would be in a vegetative state. But thank God the doctors were wrong and Smart recovered and had this to say about Alderson and his train crew, “I’m looking at a real-life angel. He’s a real-life angel, and he saved my life. I am grateful to him, my train crew that knew what to do.”
Upon Smart’s recovery, the two met and shared a joyous reunion! Love this!
