Eileen Davidson is a name synonymous with soap opera excellence. With a career spanning over four decades, she has inhabited some of the most memorable characters in daytime history. In a recent, candid episode of the Soapy podcast, hosted by fellow soap stars Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart, Davidson pulled back the curtain on her journey from a 19-year-old model in Hawaii to a multi-character powerhouse in Salem on Days of Our Lives and Genoa City on The Young and the Restless.
The Horror Beginnings and “Seeing Stars”
Before she was Ashley Abbott, Davidson was a young actress finding her footing in Hollywood. She reflected on her role in the 1982 cult classic The House on Sorority Row, a project she filmed when she was just 21. While Greg Rikaart noted that she appeared “fully formed” and mature on screen at that age, Davidson admitted she was incredibly naive.
Wanting to be a “real actress,” she famously told her co-star to actually slap her during a scene instead of faking it. “I was seeing stars,” she laughed, recalling the moment she learned that some things are better left to movie magic.
The Move from Y&R to DAYS
As many of you know, Davidson has had a legendary soap career. While she played one character, who later suffered from DID on Y&R, she moved over to Days of Our Lives in 2012, where she would eventually play five different characters. While fans saw it as a legendary crossover, Davidson revealed she was “pissed off” at the time when she was told that she was being let go.
“I felt like a baseball player; I had no say in it,” she explained, noting that she was let go from Y&R and told that Days wanted her. However, a chance viewing of Oprah shifted her perspective. By deciding to enter the new job with “no expectations” and zero bitterness, she opened the door to a creative renaissance. That year, she played a plethora of characters (including the eccentric Susan Banks) and won her very first Daytime Emmy.
The “Beast” of Beverly Hills
Davidson also touched on her three-season stint on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. While she became a fan favorite for being the “voice of reason,” she described the experience as “terrifying.”
She spoke specifically about the culture of reality TV. She expressed shock at what people will do simply to remain “relevant.” While she doesn’t regret the experience—and still shares a laugh about her husband Vinny being caught on camera with his nose pressed against the glass to watch a driveway fight—she admitted that a return is unlikely. While she has learned a lot time ago not to say never, she honestly doesn’t see it happening.
They asked her to come back, but she confessed, “The money wasn’t worth the emotional thing for me.” Davidson adds, ” I’m not cut out for it, necessarily.”
A Legacy of Impact
Beyond the drama, Davidson spoke warmly about the real-world impact of soap operas. She recalled a storyline where her character, Ashley Abbott, battled breast cancer. For years afterward, she received fan mail from women in the U.S. and Europe saying that watching Ashley’s journey prompted them to get screenings that saved their lives.
“You really are helping people on a different level that you can’t even really begin to understand,” she said, acknowledging the unique, generational bond soap actors share with their viewers.

Today, Davidson is as busy as ever, though she’s traded some of the scripted drama for the pickleball court. She revealed that her husband, former tennis pro Vinny Van Patten, has become a “maniac” for the sport, and they even have a court in their backyard.
