Evan Hofer sat down with Maurice Benard on his YouTube series, State of Mind, to chat about everything from acting to the Emmys and the importance of friendship.
Diving deep into the fascinating subject of friendship, Evan quipped, “When I’m in a bad place where I feel like a burden to people, I stop talking about it, but that’s way worse.” Evan revealed that he is a big advocate of people expressing their feelings, highlighting that it’s crucial to release them, or they will inevitably surface in unhelpful ways. He noted, “So I get into this place where I feel like I’ve been, you know, in a bad place for too long or too upset for too long and been a burden to my people and my friends for too long, and so I can’t talk about it anymore. No one is enforcing that except me, and it’s like what we talked about: your people want to be there for you, and that’s what’s so beautiful about friendship, isn’t it?”
There’s absolutely something powerful about showing up for one another, even when there are no expectations involved, and it’s heartening to see the people who genuinely care and those who reach out during tough times. Hofer shared, “I will never forget the people over the last, you know, however long when I was really struggling—the people that always showed up for me, always checked in, always made an effort—I will never forget that.”
Evan Hofer Talks Friendships and Relationships:
He emphasizes that the people who love you—be it family or friends—would prefer to support you, even if that feels like a burden, rather than facing the alternative of losing you. With deep emotion, Evan tells Benard, “I don’t know if you remember me telling you that at some point I would rather you talk to me than you potentially not be here.”
When the topic shifted to relationships, Hofer couldn’t help but smile before stating, “I think you and I have talked endlessly about relationships, and back to the friend thing for one second: when I was having a really hard time, you would always call me just to check in and see what I was doing, see how I was doing, and I was always grateful, and I will always be grateful that you cared. And there again, there’s nothing to get out of it; it was, you know, me having all these feelings and everything, and it feels very selfish and like a burden. So, you would reach out to me so that I wouldn’t feel like a burden, and that is an incredible thing that I think, again, it’s why friendship is so beautiful.” Don’t forget to check out the full episode below!
