General Hospital fans know Chloe Lanier best as the wildly unpredictable Nelle Benson, one of Port Charles’ most unforgettable troublemakers. But now, the Emmy winner is stepping into a very different kind of chaos, and… it might be her most intense role yet.
As part of Lifetime’s trio of new ripped-from-the-headlines movies dropping in January, Lanier is set to star in a film based on the infamous Mary Jo Buttafuoco shooting. I Am: Mary Jo Buttafuoco premieres January 17 at 8/7c, and it dives deep into one of the 1990s’ most sensationalized scandals.
Buttafuoco shares her story in her own words, serving as both the narrator and an executive producer on the Lifetime movie.
A Real-Life Story Even Wilder Than a Soap Plot
In this chapter of the true-crime saga, we’re taken back to May 1992, when 17-year-old Amy Fisher (Maddy Hillis) — famously labeled the “Long Island Lolita” — shot Mary Jo (played by Lanier) outside her Long Island home. While tabloids had a field day with the scandal, Mary Jo was in the hospital fighting for her life.
Lanier takes on Mary Jo in the aftermath: a woman facing permanent injuries, media frenzy, and the complicated choice to stay married to husband Joey (Dillon Casey) for seven more years after the shooting. It’s heavy, emotional material… but if you’ve seen Lanier as Nelle, you know she thrives in the deep end.
Chloe Lanier Is No Stranger to Intensity
GH fans watched her light up storylines as Nelle during her tenure, but she’s also appeared in 9-1-1, Station 19, Army Wives, and, more recently, Law & Order. This new role is different, though — less sensational, more survivor-centered.
The film is produced by Bruce Harvey for CMW Valley Productions Inc. with Studio TF1 America, with Sheri Singer, Timothy O. Johnson, Melody diDonato, and Mary Jo Buttafuoco herself as executive producers. Heather Hawthorn Doyle directs, from a script by Gregg McBride.
And of course, whenever Chloe Lanier pops up somewhere new, GH fans immediately start asking the same question: Could Nelle slither her way back to Port Charles someday? There’s no news on that front (yet), but a high-profile Lifetime project definitely keeps her Lanier’s name out there.
