Long before he became your Cane Ashby on The Young and the Restless, or that more-than-meets-the-eye Professor Henry Dalton on General Hospital, Daniel Goddard had auditioned for several soap roles he didn’t get, and the list might surprise you.
The Role He Almost Played on GH
In a chat with Soap Opera Digest, Goddard revealed that before landing the gig that changed his life and completely pivoted his acting career on Y&R, he tried out for GH, One Life to Live, and As the World Turns. On GH, he actually auditioned for the role of Patrick Drake, which ultimately went to Jason Thompson, who now plays Billy Abbott on Y&R. Soap world, tiny universe much?
Now that Goddard is playing a recurring professor on GH, he’s working closely with the actress who would’ve been his onscreen daughter if he’d booked Patrick way back when. The irony writes itself.
“Isn’t that ironic? I read for the role, Jason got cast, and then I got cast over at Y&R within a couple of months of that. So there’s this bizarre kind of crossover moment where I’m like, ‘That’s the girl that could have been my daughter if I had been cast in the role that Jason Thompson got!’” he told SOD.
Daniel Goddard Auditioned for ATWT and OLTL
Goddard also shared that he auditioned for ATWT, for the role of Brad Snyder, which ended up going to Austin Peck. His search for a soap home didn’t stop there; he threw his hat in the ring for OLTL as well, for the role that eventually went to Nash Brennan.
Ironically, it was that ATWT audition that sent him straight into his future. Because it was CBS, Barbara Bloom, who oversaw CBS Daytime at the time, brought him in to meet Lynn Latham, then co-head writer and EP of Y&R, to read for Cane, and the rest is Genoa City history.
