When General Hospital ended the week on that Friday cliffhanger, viewers were counting down the minutes until Monday. Ending the episode with Brennan walking in on a half-naked Carly with a man’s clothes scattered everywhere was absolute soap gold. And the wait was worth it. The episode did not disappoint. Neither did the actors involved. The whole cast was great, but we must highlight the incredible work of Chris McKenna as Jack Brennan.
McKenna originally came in as a recast for Charles Mesure, and he has consistently proven that he can handle the heavy lifting. Because of his work this week, he has been chosen as Soap Opera News’ performer of the week for May 4 through May 8.
This week, we watched one of the best confrontation scenes on soaps in a long time. Once Brennan got into that room, everything changed, and we do mean EVERYTHING. “How long, Carly…and who is it?” he asked in heartbreak.
McKenna’s performance was a perfect mix of what he calls “heartrage.” This is a visceral blend of devastating heartbreak and total humiliation.
We usually see Brennan as a “close to the vest” spy, but these scenes showed a much more vulnerable and unhinged side of him.
Then, when Carly told him to turn around, and he finally did and laid eyes on Valentin standing there with a gun, it was like his heart was ripped into pieces, and McKenna made all that evident.
He captured the internal crisis of a man who realized he was blinded by love. And when he delivered the line, “I can’t be this stupid,” it had a raw honesty that made you feel for him despite his own shady history.
A Triple Threat Performance on General Hospital
At its peak, this performance showed Brennan as more than just a scorned lover. He was a man whose entire world was dismantled by the one person he thought he could trust. This showdown has been one of the most anticipated moments in the current storyline. And it lived up to every bit of the hype.
Every actor involved—Laura Wright, James Patrick Stuart, and Chris McKenna—did these scenes absolute justice. It was well written, well directed, and expertly acted. It was a true triple threat for the genre. A huge congrats goes out to McKenna for being our performer of the week!
