I have been a soap fan for almost 30 years. Can you believe it? I can hardly believe it. I cannot even believe my age sometimes.
But yes, I have been watching soaps since my eyes were on my knees. I remember the days when I would sit on the porch steps watching daytime dramas with my mom, and the neighbor would come by every afternoon to catch up on her stories.
In reality, soaps have always been a place for me. Sometimes they were an escape from reality and life’s challenges over the years. And the same is true for many soap fans across the globe today.
Soaps are our jam. They have always been our jam and will continue to be our jam for as long as they are on the air.
We love the cliffhangers, the love in the afternoon, the twists, the storylines that mirror real-life events, and so much more. We love it on Days of Our Lives, Beyond the Gates, The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and the Restless, and General Hospital.
However, today, we are talking about General Hospital.
While I am not old enough to have watched GH from the very beginning, I have been watching long enough to know the characters and their families. And I can definitely comment on what 2026 has been bringing us so far in the first quarter.
Honestly, I am loving it.
Maybe not every storyline is exactly how I would write it. But I enjoy the acting and the stories that keep me on the edge of my seat. Sure, there are a few things I would fix, but we can save that for another day.
And I know I am not alone in feeling this way.
That being said, Soap Opera News recently asked fans to share their opinions about GH so far this year. Let’s take a look at what they had to say.
GH Fans Speak Out on Social Media
Some fans shared their frustrations about current storylines and character development.
On X (formerly Twitter), one fan wrote:
“I resent the writing of Portia’s pregnancy and the disservice being done to her in order to center Curtis, while her own arc (license at risk & her relationship with Isaiah exposed) is treated as an afterthought, playing out mostly offscreen. And it would be a missed opportunity if we don’t meet her mom.”
Another fan, Crystal, shared:
“Invest more in Black Hospital and not center all Black characters around one person. Portia has two doctor parents who could fit in perfectly. Let’s see Isaiah fully expanded and meet his dad. Trina needs something outside of her parents and bring back Marshall and TJ.”
Kristian pointed out another underused pairing:
“Emma and Gio are being severely underused. They are a bright spot that the show has long been lacking in romance, chemistry, and legacy. I love seeing Emma involved in the Anna story along with Felicia and Mac, but I need Gio and Emma to now have conflict to truly be tested.”
Another fan added:
“#BlackScrubs need increased airtime. They have special chemistry together on screen currently with @wandi5stacks and @brookkerr. A relative related to Isaiah in Port Charles would also be nice for them to have scenes with as a couple.”
Fans Want More for Trina and Other Legacy Characters
Several viewers focused on Trina and her lack of a major storyline.
Jasmine shared:
“I wish Trina had a storyline that focused on her and not what’s going on with her parents or what’s going on with Kai, Drew, and Willow. Realistically, Trina should be thinking about Paris, and Spencer would be back from the dead by now to give us an interesting love triangle.”
Odyssey echoed a similar concern:
“Still disappointed that Trina is taking a backseat when it comes to story opportunities. She has nothing of her own. Nothing about her. We barely see her at the gallery anymore. Does she even still have a job? Is she even still in school or graduating? Give Trina a story.”
Sara also spoke about Emma and Gio:
“Gio and Emma are this show’s best couple and they get absolutely nothing in terms of story. They are well received by fans. They disappear for weeks at a time. The actors knock everything out of the park but they are so minimally used it is infuriating. Give them something.”
Kelly added:
“It’s very fitting and highly desirable to have Valentin rescue Anna from her psych ward confinement. Both of them were seeking contact with each other when Faison’s project was initially under scrutiny. There’s a deep love and connection between these beautiful cuties.”
Another fan shared praise for a surprising pairing:
“Isaiah and Portia have been the best surprise. I still want Jordan happy, and I don’t think it’s Curtis. Portia and Jordan deserve love without stipulations.”
Lex also suggested expanding the show’s families:
“I really want expansion of the Black character set. I’d love for Portia’s dad and brother, Sterling and Zeke, to return. I’d also love to see Portia’s mom. We also need the introduction of Kai’s parents or any relatives, and the same with Isaiah.”
One fan added:
“Love all things, Jason and Britt. Loving their story. Love JaBritt. Hope they can take Cullum and Sidwell down together.”
More Praise and Criticism from GH Fans
Michaeline shared:
“Most of the storylines are okay for me, other than the usual dragging them out and the lack of balance in time given to characters, especially legacy characters like Elizabeth. She should be leading.”
Annette agreed:
“They need to give Elizabeth (Becky) a front-burner story instead of having her prop everyone else up.”
Meeshell added:
“Trina and Liz need compelling stories and not the tripe they’re currently getting, or in Liz’s case not getting. Recast Spencer and revive #Sprina. They were popular, why not capitalize on that? Listen to the fans and give Liz a real story. A Liz, Dante, Ric triangle would also be popular.”
Someone even suggested:
“More Michael and Jacinda.”
GH Fan Letters Sent to Soap Opera News
Some viewers went into even more detail about their thoughts on the show.
Melissa Sagui wrote:
“My praise is for the way the show has developed the Emma and Gio relationship. Their scenes in 2026 that have focused on their relationship have been outstanding. They are a believable young adult couple who have a ton of natural chemistry and have potential to be a modern day supercouple.
Their writing has been genuine, supportive, respectful, heartfelt, and romantic. Their first time was a beautiful transition to fully mark their progression from friends to lovers. We had terrific morning after scenes where they discussed their relationship, their family, their dreams, and their futures.
And then their I love you scenes were truly earned and a payoff of this amazing pairing for the audience. People online screamed, cried, and celebrated, myself included. This is an extremely popular and well-received twosome.”
Melissa also added a criticism:
“My complaints are that we do not get to see them that often, and we definitely do not see enough of Emma Scorpio-Drake. Braedyn Bruner has shown that she is a powerhouse actress in her scenes with Finola Hughes, and then she is off the screen for weeks. It’s frustrating as a fan to be handed scraps for such a dynamic actress and character.”
Tonya Carter also shared her concerns:
“My biggest criticism right now is the lack of a compelling storyline for Trina since Spencer’s death. She’s been regressed in age and is constantly used as a prop in her parents’ storylines.
The kissing cousins storyline is absolutely ridiculous. I can’t believe the show is doubling down on it despite the majority of viewers expressing their displeasure.
The writers continue to drag out storylines. The Willow and Drew storyline has been going on for far too long, and the writers keep adding plot points instead of introducing something new.
The possibility that Jordan is pregnant is absurd. She has a son who is almost 30 and would be a grandmother if the writers hadn’t killed off baby Irene.”
Another fan added:
“I want to see Chase and Brook Lynn have a pregnancy storyline, a miracle baby of their own, maybe even triplets.”
So now the question goes back to you.
