The soap opera world is preparing to say a final goodbye to one of its greatest icons. After weeks of anticipation, it has been confirmed that General Hospital will air a special tribute montage honoring the late Anthony Geary (Luke Spencer) on Thursday, January 22, 2026, according to Soaps.com.
The announcement follows a teaser from ABC executive Nathan Varney, who took to social media to promise fans a loving and meaningful montage celebrating Geary’s extraordinary legacy. Geary passed away on December 14, 2025, at the age of 78, following complications from a surgery.
A Legacy Like No Other
Anthony Geary was not just a soap star. He was a cultural force. His portrayal of the complicated anti-hero Luke Spencer transformed General Hospital into an international powerhouse in the early 1980s.
Alongside Genie Francis as Laura, Geary became one half of the legendary supercouple Luke and Laura. Their 1981 wedding episode remains one of the highest-rated hours in American soap opera history, drawing an astonishing 30 million viewers.
Decades later, fans are still talking about it, still rewatching clips, and still calling it one of daytime television’s most unforgettable moments.
Geary’s talent was undeniable. His work earned him a record-breaking eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. After an incredible run, Geary retired from General Hospital in 2015 and relocated to Amsterdam. The character of Luke Spencer was later killed off-screen in 2022.
One Last Goodbye
On New Year’s Day, ABC aired Geary’s 2015 farewell episode, but many fans missed it due to local programming preemptions. The upcoming tribute montage on January 22 offers another chance to honor the man who helped define General Hospital for generations.
The montage is expected to deliver a heartfelt retrospective, showcasing Luke Spencer’s most iconic moments, emotional highs, and unforgettable scenes. It will highlight Geary’s immense range, his charisma, and the legacy he leaves behind.
For longtime fans and newer viewers alike, this tribute will not just be a look back. It will be a reminder of why Anthony Geary mattered, why Luke Spencer mattered, and why his impact on daytime television will never be forgotten.
