If you ask actor, producer, and Daytime Emmy-nominated Gregory Zarian, what drew him to the world of entertainment, his answer would be American Bandstand. The iconic American music performance and dance television program introduced Zarian to the world of “lights, camera, action!” It was there he first experienced the rush and thrill of being on a set, and he has never let it go.
Zarian was “discovered” years later at Nordstrom’s. We love this reminder that no matter where you are, no matter what you are doing, destiny will find you. After all, it is its job to do so. “A writer at Days of Our Lives at that time, came up to me in the store and asked, ‘Hey, are you an actor?’ And I went, ‘Of course I am.’ I wasn’t. Next thing I knew I had a great run on Days of Our Lives.”
Since his run on Days, Zarian has modeled in Paris, Milan and Germany, appeared in commercials and in films and has guest-starred in countless hit television shows including; Entourage, Castle, Bones, The Wonder Years, Westworld, Criminal Minds and The Rookie.
Venice: The Series
For the past three seasons, Zarian has starred in Venice: The Series. The long-running web series that follows Gina Brogno, a single, gay interior designer navigating life, love, and family, is currently in its seventh season. Two-time Daytime Emmy winner Crystal Chappell stars in, directs, and executive produces the series. Zarian debuted on the show in season five as Detective Nick Pfander. In season six, he returned, this time portraying Nick’s twin brother Nate, as well as in season seven. The seventh season premiered on Valentine’s Day on Vimeo.
“Crystal brought me back and wrote a storyline for me about bullying. The storyline explores Nick and Nate’s experiences of being bullied as kids for being gay and the lasting impact it had on them. I learned how to handle bullying and how to step away from it. I found this to be especially personal. My twin and I were also bullied during our childhood, making my understanding of the situation even more meaningful. And from the experience on the show, I became an ambassador for the anti-bullying organization, Free2Luv. I get to work with this wonderful organization all because of this amazing love story by Crystal.
You know, when you boil down to it, Venice: The Series is a love story. Everyone wants love. We all live our own love stories and these stories are multifaceted and are splintered throughout those we share life with. Crystal makes the audience think. Regardless, if you end up with the person you love, what did you go through? What did you learn? What can you share? She pushes the boundaries of truth in her writing. She gives actors the playground to go deep, to go raw and to go real. It is real and escapism all in one. And today, we could all use a bit of escapism from our reality at times.”
Back to Basics
“I am so proud to be my parents’ child. My mom would literally take a broom and shove it between our elbows so we would sit upright at the table. My identical twin, Lawrence, my oldest brother Vincent, and I were raised to be gentlemen. It is a lost art. My father, who was also the Mayor of Glendale, was so chivalrous. I am going to give a plug. The Glendale train station is named after him, the “Larry Zarian Transportation Center.” My father taught us to stand up when a woman walks in a room, to hold a door to allow someone to exit before you. If I see someone struggling to put their luggage in an overhead bin, I help them. If we all lived our lives to be kind and in service to others this world would be a different place. I love what my parents instilled in me. We need to get back to the basics of human decency, kindness, and love. I am old school.”
Zarian’s Craft
Zarian lives in gratitude and in appreciation for his today and looks forward towards his tomorrow with great anticipation.
“I am lucky. I get to go to work every day and do what I love. I get paid to tell great stories that make a difference in people’s lives. And I feel God has some really great things waiting for me, and I can’t wait to experience all of it.”
