Smitty is finally getting some family on Beyond the Gates! In the Wednesday, October 21 episode of the CBS daytime drama, Jennifer Van Horn made her official debut as Smitty’s mother, Jennifer “Jenny” Smith.
Fans have been waiting to dive deeper into Smitty’s backstory, and it’s finally happening.
In the episode, Smitty is at home writing in his journal when there is a knock at the door. He assumes it is Shonda coming over to see him. However, he is surprised to find that his mom has arrived at Fairmont Crest instead. She reveals that his dad wanted to come along as well, but he had to work.
Who is Jennifer Van Horn?
Born in Augusta, Georgia, Van Horn kicked off her professional acting career shortly after graduating from college and landing a job as a flight attendant for American Airlines. Following a year in New York, she relocated to Washington, D.C., where she built up her résumé appearing in numerous corporate films and commercials before joining SAG in 1983.
Van Horn currently resides in Atlanta with her husband of forty-five years, Dan Van Horn, with whom she shares three grown children. Throughout her acting career, she has maintained a unique arrangement with American Airlines, flying international routes in between acting gigs and auditions.
Interestingly, this isn’t her first soap opera rodeo—nor her first time combining her two passions! Back in 1990, Jennifer actually appeared on All My Children playing a flight attendant.
Daytime viewers and TV fans might also recognize Van Horn from her recent television roles, including guest appearances on The Resident, Will Trent, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, NCIS: New Orleans, Genius, and Class of ’09.
Beyond the screen and the skies, Jennifer and her husband co-founded US Kids Golf in 1996, an organization that has played a role in their lives by bringing kids and families together through the sport.
