John Oliver is making headlines after a surprising and hilarious moment on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, where he openly campaigned for a role on a soap opera.
Oliver, who was born on April 23, 1977, built his career as a stand-up comedian in the United Kingdom before becoming widely known in the United States as the senior British correspondent on The Daily Show during Jon Stewart’s run. Today, he hosts his own HBO series, where he mixes comedy with commentary on current events.
But during a recent episode, Oliver took a humorous detour from the show’s main topic and revealed something fans may not have expected.
He really wants to be on a soap opera.
A Little Jealousy Over a General Hospital Cameo
The moment came while Oliver was discussing media personalities appearing on television. He specifically mentioned Stephen A. Smith, who has a recurring role on General Hospital as the character Brick.
That appearance sparked a little envy.
Oliver joked that seeing Smith pop up on the long-running ABC soap made him jealous, which led him to make a very public offer to soap operas everywhere.
Oliver told viewers that he would happily join a soap if a show created a role for him. He said, to him, he would show up to the set immediately if the opportunity came along. “I am officially offering myself to you. Write me a role, and I’ll be on your set so fast, it’ll make your head spin.“
However, he did have a few conditions.
Oliver Has Some Very Specific Requests
Oliver said he does not want to appear as himself. Instead, he wants to play a full-fledged soap character with a truly ridiculous name.
He also hopes the role would involve classic soap drama.
In his ideal scenario, the character would get involved in something juicy like a murder storyline, a dramatic slap, or even a shocking family revelation. He also admitted he would love a classic soap opera close-up where the camera zooms in on his face during a tense moment.
In return, Oliver promised he would fully commit to the performance.
To demonstrate that he could actually handle the melodrama, Oliver performed a mock soap scene during the segment.
He was joined by Jack McBrayer, known for his role on 30 Rock. McBrayer appeared dressed as Colonel Sanders, a nod to the time George Hamilton played the famous KFC founder during a guest appearance on General Hospital in 2018.
Whether Oliver’s plea will lead to an actual soap role remains to be seen. But if any daytime drama is looking for a comedian ready to dive headfirst into the chaos of long-lost relatives, shocking betrayals, and dramatic close-ups, Oliver has made it clear he’s more than willing to sign up.
So, let’s hear it, soap fans: do you want to see John Oliver on General Hospital, Days of Our Lives, Beyond the Gates, The Young and the Restless, or The Bold and the Beautiful?
