Karla Mosley (Dani, Beyond The Gates) joins Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart for the tenth episode of the Soapy podcast. Wow, it’s been ten episodes already! This one, like all Soapy episodes, is chock-full of fun facts and powerful perspectives.
Mosley opened up about her hesitancy (at first) to take the role on a brand-new soap opera, Beyond The Gates, which films in Atlanta, and to be away from her family. And now that the show has been picked up for a second season, her family has made the move to Atlanta.
“I was pretty resistant coming down and I had never spent any time here. It was more of the unknown. It wasn’t that I had anything against the city. I just didn’t know what I was walking into and to commit for so long, felt scary…It (Atlanta) has this lovely Southern undertone. And my family, my grandparents were from the South so it is nice to get back to a cultural home.”
Playing Dani has rekindled Mosley’s affection for the genre. She talked about returning to soaps after a several-year hiatus after leaving The Bold and the Beautiful as Maya Avant.
“I thought if this is the job I choose to take next, am I being pigeonholed in some ways, stuff like that. But it is not true. We work hard and the freedom that I feel is making me fall in love with the genre in an even deeper way. We get to stay with these characters. We get to go through so many journeys, twists and turns, and we do have the opportunity to do other things if we want to. It is great.”
Karla Mosley Is Grateful
Budig asked Mosley what she learned from the three characters she’s played on daytime, Christina/Guiding Light, Maya/The Bold and the Beautiful, and now with Dani/Beyond The Gates. The entire segment is worth a listen, zoom into the 27:37 mark and hear Mosley talk about her role of Maya, so powerful. She had this to say about Dani.
“I couldn’t have played Dani ten years ago. I think becoming a mother, going through life, and becoming fully embodied has allowed me to be this fully embodied person on screen. I love the liberty. I am like, I am going to keep going and wait until they tell me to stop, and they never do. They let me play in such a big way, and they give me so much juice. She is funny. She’s wild. She’s deep. She’s loving. She’s 360.”
Soapy episode always comes with cool, fun facts. This episode’s standouts are;
- Mosley and Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea, The Young and the Restless) are good friends who grew up together in New York, went to the same school, and have known each other since the sixth grade. The two performed together in the productions of Annie, The Wiz, Grease, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
- Rikaart did his research and pointed out that Mosley may be the only soap star to appear in the last episode of a soap opera, Guiding Light, and the first episode of a brand-new soap, Beyond The Gates. Love that!
