Kathleen Gati might be a recurring star on General Hospital, but she proves time and time again that she is one of the absolute best to ever do it.

She continually brings the house down as the incomparable Liesl Obrecht, and her work this week was no exception.

Gati delivered such an emotional powerhouse performance that she has been selected as the Soap Opera News Performer of the Week for June 8-12. Let’s break down the drama that earned her the crown.

Why Kathleen Gati is the Performer of the Week

This week, after being thrown into the secret room at Wyndemere, Obrecht finally learned the shocking truth about the man who has been assuming Nathan West’s life.

During a riveting episode, Liesl came face-to-face with “Nathan” and initially believed he was there to rescue her.

However, she found herself staring at an imposter who confessed to being Cassius Faison, the son Liesl believed was stillborn decades ago.

Cassius laid out the entire dark backstory of his birth. He explained how his aunt Madeline had a hand in the baby exchange. Because Madeline had a knack for those kinds of cruel schemes, she handed Cassius over to Cesar Faison in exchange for him leaving Liesl alone.

However, Madeline never told Faison that Cassius had a twin. She also never informed Liesl that her child had survived.

If that wasn’t devastating enough, Obrecht soon received another heartbreaking blow.

When she asked what happened to Nathan, Cassius revealed that Nathan died more than seven years ago when Faison shot him. Since arriving in Port Charles, Cassius had been living under Nathan’s identity.

The revelation shattered Obrecht.

The Bitch Slap and an Emotional Pact

Naturally, Obrecht was an emotional mess trying to process the wave of lies and grief. It didn’t take long for her signature fiery temper to flare up, resulting in her giving her newly discovered son a well-deserved bitch slap.

Yet beneath the anger and shock was a mother desperately trying to make sense of an impossible situation.

As the conversation continued, the emotional walls began to come down.

Obrecht realized she had been kidnapped specifically to finish the medical work left behind by Britt, who is currently on the run. Cassius warned that if she refused, Sidwell and Cullum would not hesitate to kill her. He also made it clear that he wouldn’t allow that to happen.

Driven by maternal instinct, Obrecht vowed that she wouldn’t let her son die either. What made these scenes work so well was Kathleen Gati.

The actress had to navigate shock, grief, rage, confusion, heartbreak, and hope, often within the same scene. She handled every emotional beat flawlessly.

Gati doesn’t appear on General Hospital nearly as often as we’d like, but whenever she does, she reminds viewers exactly why she’s one of the show’s strongest performers.

Simply put, Mutter knows how to act.

And this week, she absolutely showed up and showed out.

Congratulations to Kathleen Gati on being named Soap Opera News’ Performer of the Week.

Do you agree with our pick for Performer of the Week, daytime fans? How do you think Obrecht will handle working with Cassius moving forward now that the truth is officially out?
