Peter Reckell (Bo, Days of Our Lives) and Kristian Alfonso (Hope, Days
of Our Lives) affectionately known as “Bope” were recent guests on the Hey Dude… The 90s Called! Podcast, hosted by David Lascher and Christine Taylor. During the podcast, the beloved duo talked about their lightning-in-the-bottle meteoric rise in
daytime, becoming pop culture icons, their recent returns to soap opera land, and more.
One can never ever get enough of Reckell, Bo, Alfonso, Hope, or Bope, so
for fans, it is always a treat to spend time with them, and they always leave us
wanting more!
With our soap ears glued to the recording, we learned a few cool tidbits, which are noted below;
- Before becoming “Hope”, Alfonso did a movie with legendary actor
Rock Hudson, who was also a fan of Days of Our Lives.
- Mega movie star Tom Cruise auditioned for the role of “Bo
Brady.”
- Co-host and actress Taylor once auditioned for Days of Our Lives.
Another segment we found particularly interesting is when Alfonso
expounded on the importance of continuity and staying true to the show and a
character’s history. “I’m not gonna lie in my performance or try to sell
something that didn’t happen.” Alfonso shared how she kept past scripts in her
dressing room to use as a reference whenever needed. “The reason I kept those was
because for many years we had a changing of the guards – writers, producers. So,
when we get new writers, sometimes they weren’t as familiar with the show. That
was one of the reasons I started saving my scripts, so I could look back and
go, ‘Hey, listen. I know you want me to say x, y, z and this long
monologue, but this never happened!”
Most would agree that storyline and character discontinuity is an
issue known to get soap fans riled up! Alfonso said it best, saying, “The
audience is going to remember. We have a very smart audience.” Indeed!
A bit later, Reckell chimed in on the subject with, “It’s a respect for
the audience.” Indeed, again!
What really made our soap spine tingle is Reckell’s response to the
question if he and Alfonso would be interested in returning to Salem for Days’
60th-anniversary celebration, “Looks like a thing I would like to get back
in, especially with the anniversary of the show coming up. It would be great to
be a part of it.”
