Monica Quartermaine
Monica Quartermaine was a fictional character on General Hospital who came onto the scene in 1976 thanks to Patsy Rahn, but it was Leslie Charleson who made the role her own beginning in August 1977.
During the character’s tenure, she juggled being an ELQ shareholder, Chief of Staff at General Hospital, and Chief cardiologist. As the widow of physician Alan Quartermaine, she also became the queen bee of the Quartermaine Estate. After Alan’s death, she took over as Chief of Staff at GH.
Her legendary squabbles with Alan and their dysfunctional family provided enough material to keep viewers glued to their screens in the late 1970s through the ’90s. During her time on the show, Monica also battled breast cancer and was at the heart of big stories.
At the time of Charleson’s death, her tenure in the role is one of the longest in American soap operas.
