State of Mind does it again! The YouTube episodic, famous for its weekly exploration into mental health topics, is hosted by Maurice Benard (Sonny, General Hospital), who has been open about his bipolar diagnosis. The episode usually gets actors to open up in a way they don’t normally do in other forums, and this week was no different. This week’s installment featured The Young and the Restless fave, Mark Grossman (Adam Newman), who opened up about the loss of his younger brother in 2007 and how it deeply impacted him and his family.
After the usual introductory remarks, Mark discussed his background, where he was born, where he grew up, etc., modeling, and how he auditioned a couple of times for General Hospital. The conversation took a deeper turn when Maurice inquired about the impact of mental health on Mark’s family. He shared, “I had a younger brother who passed that did—he was diagnosed [with] paranoid schizophrenia.” He added, “He passed in 2007, January 1st; he wasn’t officially diagnosed [until] probably 3 months before he passed, so you know the whole progression of him getting worse—probably was two or three years, but we didn’t know that at the time.”

Recalling those difficult days, Grossman reflected on his experience, saying, “I was 19 years old at the time; he was 17, so I don’t know what I thought about it then. I probably thought, ‘Oh, my brother’s going through a phase.’” He described how both he and his brother were attending public school when his brother began to change
“We were both going to public school, and there came a time when he didn’t want to go to public school anymore. He wanted to be homeschooled—he started to withdraw, and things just got worse and worse; he stopped hanging out with his friends and then it just—it really got real bad.
