Matt Borlenghi is an actor who first came to daytime viewers’ attention as Kelly Ripa’s love interest on All My Children where he played the role of Brian Bodine. Borlenghi after leaving the soap earned an Emmy nomination for his outstanding portrayal. Daytime viewers may also remember him as Ziggy on The Bold and the Beautiful and Anthony on Days of Our Lives. He has also spent several years creating and developing TV shows. He has appeared on hit primetime shows such as; Rosewood and Castle and is the proud father of a girl and twin boys. Soap Opera News caught up this talented man who discussed his time on daytime television, upcoming projects and much more – read below!
Congrats on landing the lead role on Dead Silent – can you preview what fans can expect from you, your character and the series? And, what are your hopes for the future of the show?
Matt:Dead Silent is an Investigation Discovery series that tells the stories, episode by episode, of real-life murders. My role is actually a lead guest role, as the cases are all different years and places. I play the detective who solved the murder of Heather Young in 2016, in Minnesota.
You spent a number of years in daytime television playing; Brian Bodine on AMC, Ziggy Deadmarsh on B&B and Mayor Anthony Morino on Days – can you share what your soap experience was like?
Matt: All My Children was my first soap gig and my longest and most noteworthy, as Kelly Ripa and I were blessed to become extremely popular. It was my impulsive decision to leave the show in favor of doing sitcoms that led to the casting of Mark Consuelos as her new Love interest. The rest is history (you’re welcome Kelly).
B&B was fun to do as Ziggy Deadmarsh might have had the greatest soap name ever.
Days was fun because only a soap would cast ME as the Mayor of a city. However, I think it all worked very well. Hated that I was assassinated so soon.
Would you do soaps again?
Matt: I live in Atlanta now and am working fairly regularly as an actor on cool shows, so in order to consider doing a network soap again, the character would have to be pretty compelling, as would the offer and the contract term.
The Chew has been canceled and AMC fans would call this justice for losing their favorite drama a number of years ago. Some are hopeful this means the revival of AMC, what are your thoughts and would you be open to going back if so?
Matt: I hate when any show is canceled because it means people are out of work, but what a stupid decision to replace AMC with The Chew in the first place. Just dumb. Unfortunately, I don’t see AMC ever coming back, though I’d strongly consider reviving Brian Bodine if the show ever got a new life. Filming it in Atlanta would cement that idea.
What other gigs do you have in the pipeline?
Matt: My role on Cobra Kai, on Youtube Red, was set up to be a recurring role. The crazy success of the show has me optimistic about that happening. I’m also getting ready to film a role on another new Youtube Red series called Now We Here. Further, my reps are currently shopping a 1-hour drama series I created & wrote called ATF.
What keeps you busy outside of acting?
Matt: I have 3 young kids and a regular day job as well, in the home improvement field, and I also head the Atlanta chapter of Gray Studios acting school, which is the most prolific school in Los Angeles. So, I don’t really have any real free time, but if I ever do a round of golf or a ride on my old Harley really helps clear the head a bit.
So, fans would you love to see Borlenghi back on Daytime Television?
