In the reel world of TV, we love an entertaining, super, sudsy, drama, like Tyler Perry’s Sistas, that keeps our dancing pupils plastered to the screen. We can’t get enough. And what can make our viewing experience more enjoyable is when we receive a heartwarming dose of reality that hits us right in the feels.
During the most recent episode of the comedy drama, titled “Web of Deceit,” we were “hit” pretty good. In the midst of us immersed and engaged, in the quarreling quad, a turmoil-filled trio of litigious law office shenanigans and the Roots to Riches rumble, “Michael” (Roman) and “Zac” (Devale Ellis) were blessed with an early Christmas miracle.
The father and son arrived home after Zac picked Michael up from school. Zac, in a timeless parent tradition, offered Michael a snack before starting his homework. Zac’s offer of eggs was met with a shake of Michael’s head, “No.” Then Zac posed the choice of “fish sticks or nuggets?”
Michael’s First Word on Sistas:
Michael, a child with special needs, who up to that point had been non-verbal, whispered shyly, in response, “Nuggets.” Reading Zac’s surprised expression, Michael repeated the word a little bit louder, “nuggets.” An elated, emotional, and ecstatic dad asked his son to repeat himself, which Michael did three more times. Zac’s ears weren’t playing tricks on him; Michael had spoken for the first time! His first word was, Nuggets! Nuggets! Nuggets!
We were all up in our feels as we witnessed the heartwarming, life-changing moment for Zac and Michael. Our hearts were also stirred because we knew the significant impact this scene would have in the lives of children with special needs, their families, and loved ones.
For some, it serves as encouragement for them to keep believing for their own Michael-like moment, and for others, they are able to relive joyous milestones. And it serves as a beacon of hope for all those in the special needs’ community and heartens them to keep the faith because all things are truly possible.
In fact, Zac and Michael’s experience is an early Christmas gift for us all. It is a reminder to stay expectant, stay believing, and know that miraculous breakthroughs await us all. (Photo: BET)
