In a new episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz sits down with Hollywood star Ryan Gosling. They talk about his career, his role in the film adaptation of Project Hail Mary, and behind-the-scenes stories from some of his biggest projects. Gosling also shares his surprising love for soap operas, especially Days of Our Lives, and the actors who make the wild storylines work.

In Project Hail Mary, Gosling talks about the “Hail Mary” nature of the production. He also explains why the filmmakers chose practical puppetry for the alien character Rocky instead of CGI.

He even had his daughters help him rehearse, reading Rocky’s lines to make the scenes feel real. The conversation also touches on his involvement in the Star Wars universe and a memorable moment when Tom Cruise flew in by helicopter to help film an action sequence.

Ryan Gosling’s Love for Soap Opera Actors

Gosling doesn’t hold back when talking about the skill it takes to act in soaps. He says, “They don’t get the love they deserve. Like 10 pages of dialogue, they get one take. And it’s impossible scenarios like when Marlena—Deidre Hall—gets possessed.”

He admires the way soap actors handle constantly changing storylines, from characters returning from the dead to recasts that happen without skipping a beat.

He adds, “What’s amazing is thinking about how much Deidre Hall had to do. Playing a possessed character is a lot to ask, and she makes it look effortless.”

Early Career and Setbacks

Gosling also reflects on his early career, including his time on Young Hercules. He shares a setback from later on, being fired from The Lovely Bones after gaining 60 pounds for the role. Watch the full Ryan Gosling interview below!
