Fan favorite Sarah Joy Brown had a heart-to-heart with Maurice Benard (Sonny) on his YouTube series, State of Mind. The show, hosted by the General Hospital star and three-time Daytime Emmy Award winner, usually has celebs diving into deep topics. What started as a stroll down memory lane of her days on General Hospital as Carly and Claudia turned into a deeper conversation when Sarah explained why she wanted to chat with Maurice on State of Mind again.
As they reminisced about working together and the storylines they shared, Sarah confessed to watching scenes from her time as Carly on General Hospital. They also talked about relationships, and Sarah shared her tips for dealing with medication.
Hoping she can maybe help someone else avoid the nightmare she went through, the soap opera veteran shared about the assault that totally broke her. Holding back tears, she said, “Something happened in 2016, and it blew up my life.” She added, “I really struggled with my mental health as a result of it for years… horrible isolation, and I’m gonna try so hard guys, I’m not going to cry. I’m not Carly [laughs]. So I’m trying really hard to not cry and just to hold it together, and the reason I wanted to come on here and tell this story in the first place is because there’re a lot of women that this is happening to.” Brown later revealed, “I was roofied, and I was raped—violently, from what I could tell. I don’t have any memory of it.”
Sarah Joy Brown Opens Up About The Assault that Shattered Her Life:
She mentioned, “It was horrifying, and my mental health tanked,” adding, “I’ve never been in a situation like that where I felt so helpless and unable to take care of myself.”
Sarah Joy Brown admits that it took her years, “it took years of extreme darkness. I was celibate for a long time. I’m too much of a control freak to manage that somebody had their way with me and I wasn’t able to stop them and I don’t know what they did to me.” Of course, the session did not end without Brown leaving some advice for others, “Buy your own drink. Always.” Check out the full interview below!
