Sonny and Nina make love on The Haunted Star on General Hospital the week of February 7th!
Sonny has spent weeks trying to get wife, Carly, to forgive him for lying about his feelings for and past relationship with Nina when he was in Nixon Falls. He goes all out with plans to recreate their romantic wedding on Martinique on The Haunted Star but when Carly is late and he thinks she has stood him up he in devastated and gives in to his lingering feelings for Nina who has shown up to check on him after overhearing his daughter talk about her father’s unbalanced mental state.
Maurice Benard, who plays Sonny, explained to Soap Opera Digest, “He has been trying everything to get Carly back and she keeps saying no…I don’t want to say he’s been begging, but basically, he’s been begging! He keeps trying and trying and he has this one last effort that he’s planned.”
Things go awry when Carly is late and Sonny thinks she isn’t coming. Benard said “He absolutely thinks it’s over with Carly. He’s been waiting for hours and she’s not showing up. So he’s thinking ‘It’s over! It’s done!’ He’s done everything he could. If she had shown up it would have been a different story but she didn’t so he’s devastated. Plus he’s sick. There’s a lot going on!”
When Nina shows up, Sonny cries on her shoulder and talks about their time together in Nixon Falls. He also acknowledges Carly was right about him protecting Nina. Benard praised his co-star, Cynthia Watros who plays Nina, “She was amazing in those scenes. She’s full of vulnerability and love and kindness.”
Everything combined proves to be too much for Sonny and “he can’t help himself.” Benard explained, “It just happens. So they go into the bedroom.”
