At Day of Days in Los Angeles, Stephen Nichols (Steve Johnson, Days of our Lives) and Abigail Klein (Stephanie Johnson, Days of our Lives) sat with Soap Opera News to talk about what motivates their characters.
During introductions, online footage of previous Days’ story arcs was mentioned, “I love watching all that though!” Proclaimed Klein, “Footage of [Stephen Nichols] and Mary Beth! From [their] wedding, on the yacht! I’m glad that’s still out there!”
On what is important to know about their character’s past, Nichols said about the Patch, “It was obviously a traumatic event in his life. He felt insecure in his life, also because of the way he was treated as a child. So the patch just added to that agony and low self-esteem. Then, when he met Kayla, everything changed and she lifted him up. She made him believe that he was a good person who could do good in the world, instead of working for Kiriakis and doing all the dirty deeds.
At this point the patch is a badge of honor, Steve sees it as a badge of honor. Nobody calls me ‘Patch’ anymore! They wrote it in as if it was an insult to be called ‘Patch,’ but I don’t agree with that.
The only person who called me ‘Patch’ was Ava because when she met me, I had no name; I was literally ‘Patch!’
Bottom line, I’m a Patch man! Personally, as an actor, I love having that.”
When suggested the name “Ol’ Patchy” Nichols jokingly objected, “Now you’re going a little too far!”
On whether or not Stephanie is done with Alex Kiriakis, Nichols says “Maybe he’s done with her!” then asks, “He’s such a bed hopper! Does he even own a shirt?”
Abigail gets serious, “Stephanie probably won’t date another person who turns her phone off without her knowing. That will leave a sore spot for her. But she’s in PR; she owns her own firm. She never wants to burn bridges with anybody because she never knows when she needs a favor for somebody. So, she keeps her relationships copacetic. That’s where she’s at with Alex.”
When it comes to the tension of living across the hall from Alex, “Stephanie is smart! She knows what he’s doing, ‘OK, you’re gonna move across the hall from me and come over without a shirt on?’ But she’s also very empathetic. She does have a soft spot for him. He’s going through so much with his family and his work, so she does feel for him.”
“I appreciate she’s solely focused on Chad.” Abigail said about Alex’s romance with Theresa, “She doesn’t take that lightly and doesn’t want to play with that and look elsewhere. I like that they didn’t write drama for her and Theresa… we’ll see. She’s a one-man gal.”
If given the chance to write for their characters, Nichols said firmly, “Grandchildren!”
“Children. She wants to be a mom! She wants that too!”
