It was a historic night for Beyond the Gates on Friday, October 30, at the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards! After securing a staggering 15 nominations in its very first year of eligibility, the freshman CBS serial celebrated another massive win as legendary actress Tamara Tunie took home the statuette for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
The victory marks Tunie’s very first Daytime Emmy nomination and win, coming just a year and a few months after making her debut as Anita Williams Dupree, the fierce matriarch of the wealthy Dupree clan in Fairmont Crest.
A Historic Milestone for Daytime Television
Tunie’s victory comes 39 years after making her daytime television debut back in 1987. In a powerhouse field, she was nominated alongside her Beyond the Gates co-star and on-screen daughter Karla Mosley (Dani Dupree), Stacy Haiduk (Kristen DiMera, Days of Our Lives), Michelle Stafford (Phyllis Summers, The Young and the Restless), and Heather Tom (Katie Logan, The Bold and the Beautiful).
The nominations for Tunie and Mosley made history as the very first time two Black actresses were nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress category in the same year. With her win, Tunie also became only the second woman of color to ever take home the trophy for Lead Actress!
An Emotional Acceptance Speech
Taking the stage to accept her statuette to a resounding ovation, Tunie was met with applause fit for an absolute icon.
“My heart is so full right now. This is the best welcome back to daytime ever,” Tunie began. “There is a host of Black actresses who paved the way for me, and I feel them as I stand here tonight, beginning with the legendary Cicely Tyson, the first Black woman to appear on a daytime television show, The Guiding Light.”
Tunie gave a special shoutout to her fellow nominees and her on-screen family, highlighting the bond she shares with Mosley and on-screen husband Clifton Davis (Vernon Dupree):
Praising Her Colleagues
“Congratulations to my sister nominees, especially my TV wild child, Dani, who is portrayed by the beaming light that is Karla Mosley. I am so honored to be in the company of you formidable women. Man, we had a ball the other night. There was a lot of wine and a lot of food, and we were solving all the problems of the world. I get to share the camera with the legendary Mr. Clifton Davis, the best, most loving husband on daytime television.”
Closing out her speech, Tunie delivered a deeply moving tribute to her 92-year-old mother, who was sitting in the audience watching her daughter make history:
“There is one person who has been on this journey with me every single step of the way, who has traveled across states, countries and oceans to support my dream. I would not be who I am as an actor or a woman without her love, support, encouragement and mere presence. She has been my example, my role model and my inspiration. I accept this honor on behalf of my mother… who, at 92 years young, crossed the country yet again to see me take this goal tonight. I love you, mommy!”
From Oakdale to Fairmont Crest: Tamara Tunie is a Daytime Icon
Tunie’s legendary daytime career began in 1987 when she joined As the World Turns as attorney Jessica Griffin, a beloved role she portrayed on and off until 2009. During her time in Oakdale, she also landed her famous role as medical examiner Dr. Melinda Warner on NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, alongside credits in NYPD Blue, 24, and Sex and the City.
Her return to daytime in 2025 as Anita Williams Dupree has been nothing short of extraordinary. As a former singer, matriarch to daughters Nicole Richardson (Daphnée Duplaix) and Dani Dupree, and wife to retired Senator Vernon Dupree, Tunie has anchored the show with remarkable grace—especially throughout Anita’s emotional breast cancer storyline.
Tunie’s historic victory follows co-star Ambyr Michelle’s win earlier in the night for Outstanding Emerging Talent (Eva Thomas), and their win for Best Hairstyling and Makeup, and Best Lighting, capping off a triumphant Emmy debut for Beyond the Gates.
