Tanner Novlan is trading the drama of Los Angeles for cowboy country! And no, he is not leaving The Bold and the Beautiful!

Best known to fans as Dr. John “Finn” Finnegan, Novlan is set to star as the lead cowboy in the upcoming romantic comedy Cowboy Hearts opposite reality TV star Kristin Cavallari.

The Roku Channel has officially announced the scripted film, which is being produced by FOX Entertainment Studios and is set for a 2027 release.

Key takeaways

  • Tanner Novlan will star as the lead cowboy in Cowboy Hearts.
  • He’ll appear opposite Kristin Cavallari.
  • The romantic comedy is set to premiere on The Roku Channel in 2027.
  • Novlan has already appeared in several Christmas movies and rom-coms.

Tanner Novlan Is Going Cowboy

Finn may be used to hospital drama, but Novlan’s next character is trading the scrubs for boots.

In Cowboy Hearts, Cavallari plays a no-nonsense reality TV producer who heads to Georgia to oversee the reboot of a hit dating show with the same name. That’s where Novlan’s cowboy comes in. Things take an unexpected turn when Cavallari’s character starts falling for the rugged cowboy behind the scenes. Now she’s got a problem.

She’s supposed to be doing her job, keeping the show on track and making sure everything goes according to plan. Instead, she’s catching feelings for one of the people involved in the show.

With the cameras rolling and her job on the line, she’ll have to decide whether love is worth going off script.

Sounds like trouble — but the fun kind.

Kristin Cavallari Returns to a Leading Film Role

The movie also marks a notable return for Cavallari. Cowboy Hearts will be her first feature-film lead acting role in more than 17 years. The film is directed by Traci Hays and written by Paris Herbert-Taylor.

While B&B fans know Novlan as Finn, this isn’t his first time stepping outside of the CBS soap for another acting gig. He’s also become really popular as the “Struggling Actor” in Liberty Mutual commercials.

And if you’ve watched your share of holiday movies, you’ve probably spotted him there too. Novlan has appeared in several Christmas movies and romantic comedies over the years, including My Best Friend’s ChristmasChristmas Class Reunion, and Debbie Macomber’s Joyful Mrs. Miracle.

Now fear not—Tanner is not leaving the CBS daytime drama! In fact, you can catch him weekdays on CBS, where things are heating up fast. Unbeknownst to Finn, his wife, Steffy, is pregnant and convinced the baby isn’t even his… hello, Carter!

So while playing a rugged cowboy may be a new look for Novlan, the romantic comedy territory is familiar.

A cowboy, a dating show, a reality TV producer, and a little forbidden workplace romance? We’re in. Stay tuned for updates.

Are you excited to see Tanner Novlan play a cowboy? And do you think he and Kristin Cavallari will make a good rom-com pairing?
