In the latest episode of Soapy, the podcast hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart, General Hospital‘s Cameron Mathison stopped by for a raw, heartfelt, and surprisingly emotional conversation. From his early days on All My Children to the challenges he’s faced both on and off screen, Mathison held nothing back.
The Hate for Drew Cain
He opened up about playing the “horrible” Congressman Drew Cain — a character he admits is nothing like him in real life. “I know the people at home that are watching just absolutely detest Drew,” he confessed. At first, even he didn’t fully understand the character’s sudden transformation, and neither did the audience.
Still, he says the challenge of playing such a disliked character is also what makes it fun. Unlike his character Ryan Lavery on All My Children, who only had a short-lived dark phase, Drew is giving him a whole new kind of opportunity: “I’ve never had a chance to play someone so detestable.”
Budig didn’t hesitate to sing his praises, calling him an inspiration — and the love in the room was palpable.
Cameron Mathison Opens up about His Losses
But things took a deeply personal turn when Mathison opened up about the intense struggles he’s been navigating in recent years. Holding back tears, he spoke about everything he’s been juggling behind the scenes:
“Trying to rebuild — dealing with lawyers, lawsuits, insurance, going through a divorce, my kids going off to college — two in college — doing Christmas movies, working at GH, rebuilding my life, staying healthy, and launching a coaching company.”
He added with a shaky laugh that he’s probably forgetting a few things.
The moment grew even more emotional when Rikaart acknowledged how inspiring it is to see Cameron show up for others, even with so much on his plate. Budig reached for the tissues. And Cameron was sobbing.
He bravely shared:
“I went through a very scary, you know, life-threatening kidney cancer journey.”
He then talked about how, during that time, his mother had been helping him through it — but something wasn’t right.
“It was very clear that something’s going on with her brain, and then she was diagnosed just weeks later with, um, a really horrible form of brain cancer.”
The hits just kept coming. He lost his job as a talk show host. He and his wife Vanessa, entered a painful separation that led to the divorce he’s currently going through. Then his beloved dog passed away, his kids went off to college, and his house burned down.
And yet, through it all, Cameron remains grounded and incredibly grateful. He admits to feeling grief, anger, and sadness, but also a deep sense of growth.
He said that his kids are doing well, though they’re devastated — and “that’s the hardest part for sure.”
Cameron Mathison also touched on moving forward after Home and Family, landing his current role on General Hospital, his passion for health and wellness, and launching his new coaching business.
