This week, Emmy-winning actor Jonathan Jackson—known to longtime General Hospital fans as Lucky Spencer—is once again bidding farewell to Port Charles. His 2024 comeback was originally meant to be more than a nine-month stint, but as Jackson recently told TV Insider, the realities of juggling family life and filming led him to step away sooner than planned.
Why Jonathan Jackson’s Return Didn’t Last Longer
Jackson explained that the return was a sincere effort on both sides—his and the show’s—to make it a long-term thing. “It was more of a real, sincere attempt from myself and from General Hospital to make it work for a longer period of time,” he said.
So what went wrong? In short: life logistics. Jackson currently lives in Tennessee, while GH is filmed in California. The back-and-forth, while doable in theory, proved too tough in practice.
“There were moments where I thought, ‘I think I can find this balance with the family and time back and forth,’” he shared. “But then you just have to pray about it and try to do what you feel is right. We gave it our best shot, but we weren’t able to keep it going.”
What’s Next for Him?
While he’ll miss his co-stars, Jackson isn’t slowing down. Far from it.
“There’s some touring coming up,” he said. “I’ll be releasing a solo album later this year. I have at least one book that’s coming out later this year as well—actually, two: a book of poetry and an anthology I’ve been working on for 15 years called Anthology of Longing.”
So while Lucky may be off the GH canvas (for now), fans will still have plenty of Jonathan Jackson to look forward to. (Photo: ABC.)
