Trevor St. John (Y&R) joined Maurice Benard on State of Mind this last Sunday on YouTube. Their nearly hour-long conversation spoke candidly about their careers, where their character’s darkness comes from, as well as participating in projects that matter to them deeply.
Having never met in a significant way prior to sitting down for State of Mind, Benard and St. John spent a few minutes feeling out the conversation by sharing an appreciation for music as Trevor studied to be a jazz musician. Quickly, the topic shifted to acting and learning which was each other’s great calling.
Benard remembered his early acting jobs as difficult, believing he didn’t have much talent in the beginning. He found it difficult to channel his real emotions into convincing performances for his characters.
Together they agreed that when it comes to it, they will play each scene the way they think will be best for their performances. As actors, it is up to them to channel the depths of themselves in such a way as to bring reality to what they’re doing on screen.
In 2022 Trevor St. John wrote, directed, and starred in the film A Good Enough Day which was about a man’s battle with grief. Benard had difficulty holding back tears the entire chat about the movie that left a lasting impact on the Emmy award winner.
Maurice and Trevor discussed personal tragedies and guardian angels in their lives which was something heavily focused on in the film. Much of the content of A Good Enough Day is somewhat autobiographical in St. John’s own experience with losing his sister in an accident when he was 15.
Maurice Benard ran out of structured questions for the interview. The rapport earned between the two stars spurred a lasting conversation to close the conversation regarding freeing oneself from worrying about other’s judgment while finding contentment with your current circumstances.
