As Soapy, the Podcast hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart is set to wrap season one this month, the latest episode featured none other than The Bold and the Beautiful fave and three-time Emmy award-winning actor, Scott Clifton (aka Liam Spencer).
The episode, which is just over 50 minutes, sees Clifton talking about his shape-shifting career, why he left General Hospital, and why he has mixed feelings about one of his Emmy wins.
Why Scott Clifton Left General Hospital
Before there was Liam Spencer on B&B, there was Schuyler Joplin on One Life to Live. And before that, there was Dillon Quartermaine on GH, a role Clifton held from 2003 – 2007.
Clifton reflected on his time on the show and working with the greats like Tony Geary (aka Luke Spencer).
But as the conversation shifted to his General Hospital exit back in 2007, Scott Clifton explained that the decision was all his. “Yeah, I left GH — like cocky little.“
Greg assumed he had left because they had asked him to. However, Clifton cleared things up, saying, “No, no, no. I left. I decided not to renew my contract because I was like, ‘I’m gonna make something of myself… Oh, this was just a stepping stone.”
He adds, “[I’m gonna] Go out there and find myself and be a big-time movie actor in superhero films.“
Clifton noted that a few months later, he got the call to test for One Life to Live. Long story short, it was a success; he got the role, but he was only on that show for a year and change.
How He Feels About Liam Bouncing Back and Forth Between Women
Moving on to The Bold and the Beautiful, where he is a three-time Emmy award-winning actor, Clifton had much to say about his character. Of course, his work speaks volumes, having taken home the gold for 3 different categories for his role as Liam Spencer, but that doesn’t mean he’d ever be friends with Liam in real life.
Touching the subject of the constant bouncing back and forth between women on the show, Clifton couldn’t help but acknowledge that love triangles were “like soap bread and butter for a really long time.“
He added, “But I don’t think we live in that world anymore, and I think that we’re at a place now where that’s not only not attractive but beginning to be unattractive. That doesn’t mean you still can’t play the story. It just means that when I’m playing Liam, I’m recognizing that I’m not playing the hero.“
At the end of the day, he wishes Liam would treat women better — we all do! But the story is relatable because there are people who treat people this way in real life.
Why He Has Mixed Feelings About One of His Emmy Wins
Throughout the entire conversation, Scott Clifton was like an open book. He was honest to a T and even revealed why he has mixed feelings to this day about one of his Emmy wins.
After explaining that the Emmy rules had just changed. Clifton shared:
I have a lot of feelings about that moment in time. Um, because that was the first year that they — it used to be you just pick one or two [shows], and then it was this year where they changed it and they said, ‘Okay, you can you can take from up to four different shows and you don’t have to use the entire episode as long as you’re not putting things out of order and all these new rules.’
And I was fascinated by this. I was just lucky enough to kind of figure out how I could use that and I was like, ‘Okay, well, I’m going to use this to tell a story, right?’ But I didn’t have the best performance. I just gamed the system better than any of the other nominees.
And that was a year that, if I could go back and that was a year that Kristoff [St. John] should have won, needed to win, deserved to win, and we had he and I had lots of conversations about that. That was a big. It mattered to him because we had both won for younger and supporting, and if either one of us got that Emmy handed to us, it would have been like a record of the first actor to have all three.”
