The Young and the Restless aired a special PSA about addiction at the end of its May 28 episode.
In the clip, Joshua Morrow, who has been tackling Nick Newman’s addiction storyline, appeared standing inside the fictional Crimson Lights coffeehouse. Speaking directly to viewers, he said:
“Addiction can happen to anyone. But it should never define, or end, a life. If you or someone you know needs help, you’re not alone. Visit Shatterproof.org for resources and support.”
The emotional PSA came after one of the most intense episodes. Nick’s addiction storyline reached a breaking point when he suddenly collapsed inside the Newman office in front of multiple witnesses.
Victor then made the shocking decision to allow Matt to help perform CPR alongside Phyllis in an effort to revive Nick. The character had been struggling with a dangerous fentanyl addiction following the accident that changed everything for him.
Fans Praise Joshua Morrow and the Storyline
After the PSA was shared on social media, viewers quickly filled the comments section with emotional reactions.
Joshua Morrow was even chosen as Soap Opera News’ performer of the week!
One fan wrote, “Wow…this was a powerful episode.”
Another commented, “You’ve played this role exceptionally well, and I wish I hadn’t witnessed real life to verify. As much as I want Nick to recover, it’s important to know it doesn’t happen overnight, if it happens at all.”
A third viewer shared, “Thank you for the knowledge and great job on your role as an addict.”
One especially emotional comment praised the show for helping educate viewers about addiction and substance abuse:
“I want to thank each and every one of you for educating us how bad addiction can be. The side effects the drug can cause, what to watch for if we know someone close who might become addicted. At least we are being educated from Y&R.”
The fan also reflected on drug education programs they experienced in school during the early 1980s and thanked the writers and cast for handling such a difficult topic with care.
The Young and the Restless Has Tackled Real-Life Issues Before
This is far from the first time that The Young and the Restless has explored storylines focusing on real-life struggles. The soap has addressed difficult and emotional topics many times since premiering in March 1973.
Daytime soaps have often used their large audiences to bring awareness to important issues, including addiction, mental health, illness, and family trauma. This latest storyline from the CBS daytime drama continues that tradition.
Shatterproof, the organization mentioned in the PSA, is a national nonprofit dedicated to reversing the addiction crisis in the United States. The organization was founded in 2013 by Gary Mendell. In case you missed it, watch Joshua Morrow’s PSA below!
