At 98 years old, almost 99, Dick Van Dyke secured another Emmy award. Making waves at the Daytime Emmy Awards earlier this year, he became the oldest Emmy award winner by clinching the award for Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama series, for his role as Timothy Robicheaux on Days of our Lives. Now, he has added another accolade to his collection, this time at the Primetime Creative Arts Emmys.
On Saturday, Sept. 7, the 98-year-old triumphed in the category of outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) for his 98th birthday special, Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic. This two-hour tribute CBS special, which showcased archival footage and live performances of songs from Van Dyke’s illustrious career, aired in December.
Van Dyke’s win solidifies his status as the oldest winner of a Creative Arts Emmy, equaling the record set by the late Norman Lear, who previously held the title for his own special, Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s All in the Family and Good Times, which he won at age 98 in 2020.
As for the kind of legacy he wants to leave, Van Dyke mentions he wants to be remembered for “laughter” and “making people laugh for 75 years.” He adds, “I’ve been in the business 75 years. I can’t believe it, that I’m still here and performing. I’m looking for work if anybody has!”
Dick Van Dyke’s illustrious career includes both screen and stage work, which earned him prestigious accolades including a Golden Globe Award, a Tony Award, and seven Emmy Awards, including his latest win.
The 2024 Creative Arts Emmys will air Saturday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. ET on FXX, and can also be streamed on Hulu from Sept. 15 through Oct. 9.
