On Thursday October 5, 2023 actress Bonnie Burroughs’ took
her final bow in Port Charles as her character “Gladys Corbin” was sent back to
Bridgeport by her cousin Sonny (Maurice Benard.) Burroughs spoke to Soap
Opera Digest, about her time at
General Hospital, her character’s recent departure and more.
The role of Gladys came at 58 years old when Burroughs
wasn’t expecting a “big old [career] break.” She shared that although she is
sad about leaving GH, “my favorite job I’ve ever had,” she is very
grateful that her stint, which was supposed to last for a few days, lasted four
years. “So, even as I grieve, if that’s not too dramatic of a word to
use, I just keep remembering that [the job coming to an end] doesn’t take away
from the joy of all the time that I got to be there. I just loved every second
of it, and that is not diminished by the fact that Gladys is gone.”
Being on the show for that length of time gave Burroughs
the chance to sink her teeth into her character. It “allowed me to grow the
character, to develop my confidence with the work and to have more fun with
Gladys and to try new things.”
She further stated that she wasn’t totally surprised that
her time at GH was coming to an end, as the recent storyline [Gladys
coming clean with Sasha] gave an inkling of what was to come. Her departure was
then confirmed by Executive Producer Frank Valentini and Burroughs was grateful
for the heads up. “I’m glad I did get that heads-up, because if I hadn’t, when
I got the script for the last episode, it would have hit me harder.”
Burroughs told SOD that her time on the show, being
“part of a healthy, supportive family” and playing “messy, liar” Gladys has
been the ultimate “gift.” A gift that she is more than willing to receive
again if GH would ask her to return at some point.
However, right now, she is enthusiastically looking towards
her future. “I’ll get more work. [My exit] isn’t a tragedy. And as I continue
on with my life, I’m looking forward to my next job. I feel like all that time
doing Gladys really has kind of fine-tuned my engine and I can’t wait to apply
it to the next thing.”
