This week’s (July 3-7 2023) Couple of the Week is Days of Our Lives’ Eli Grant (Lamon Archey) and Lani Price Grant (Sal Stowers), or Elani as their fans call them.
It’s been almost a year since Days fans have seen Eli and Lani. Lani killed her biological father and was sent to prison. She had to be sent out of state to serve her time because she was a police officer which made the local prison, Statesville, unsafe for her. To be close to her, Eli packed up their twins, Jules and Carver, and moved to Maryland, where Lani was completing her sentence.
This week we got them back together for one glorious day spread over a couple of episodes, which also happened to be their wedding anniversary. Eli had gotten Lani furloughed for the funeral of her father, Abe (James Reynolds). She was under supervised release and had to wear an ankle monitor but she was home. They surprised her brother Theo (Cameron Johnson) and then her mother, Paulina (Jackée Harry), before heading to the Salem PD so that Lani could see the evidence in Abe’s case for herself.
At the PD, Lani and Eli reminisced about becoming partners and falling in love and then got down to work going over the evidence. There was an adorable light-hearted moment when Lani teased Eli about how he used to watch the soap opera Body & Soul when he was on the night shift and bored at home during the day. He tried to deny it but there was no fooling his wife, who knows all his secrets.
They got the bad news that Eli was going to have to leave that night to check on a case in Arizona but Rafe (Galen Gering), offered to take over Lani’s supervision while Eli had to be gone. The couple only had a few hours left together and they had stops they each wanted to make. They went to the docks and saw Theo and Jerry (Terrell Ransom Jr.) talking at Abe’s memorial and Eli was horrified when Lani shared that her husband was a fan of the soap opera Jerry had appeared on.
Once they were alone, Eli comforted his wife as she mourned her father at his memorial. They ended their day together at the park, watching the fireworks and having a picnic. Lani was touched by a gift their twins had made for her and the couple shared a touching moment and a beautiful kiss in the precious time they had left together. Hopefully, they will be reunited soon and able to come home to Salem but for now, this was a lovely interlude for their fans.
