Spoilers for Days of Our Lives on September 1, 2023: Dick Van Dyke guest stars. Shawn makes amends. Brady gets a surprise visit. Rafe makes an important professional decision.
Days of Our Lives Episode Recap September 1, 2023: Jada Delivers A Mysterious Stranger
Brady and Belle discuss Philip and Shawn at the Pub. She shares with him how worried she is about her husband. John comes in as Belle is heading out. He offers to buy them lunch but Belle says she is going to see Shawn. As she leaves John and Brady watch in concern. Brady and John talk about Philip and Victor and John’s rocky history with Victor. Brady tells him he wants to honor Victor’s memory and focus on getting custody of Rachel back.
They talk about everything Brady has been going through and John does his best to be a supportive father. He encourages his son to not give up on love even though Brady is doubting that it’s in the cards for him. Brady goes back to the apartment and there’s a knock on the door. He opens it and is surprised to see Theresa standing there.
Shawn meets with Marlena and thanks her for putting him on the 24-hour hold. He tells her that he knows that he needed it but he wants to go home now. In the lobby, Jada tells Kayla that an office found an elderly man wandering on the side of the road and asks her to evaluate him. Kayla agrees and the officer rolls the man over in a wheelchair.
Shawn promises Marlena that he will stick with therapy this time but thinks he will be better off at home with Belle. Marlena agrees and tells him she will lift the hold. She asks him to promise that if he feels the way he did the day before he will get help and he does. The mystery man has no idea what his name is but is very playful and charming.
Shawn runs into Jada and asks if she is okay with them being partners again. She tells him that she would love that and he thanks her. He hopes that Rafe feels the same way and Jada tells him that Rafe may not take the job. Kayla takes the mystery man to an exam room and finds that he is dehydrated but mostly okay. His memory has issues but he seems competent.
Marlena and Kayla come in and Kayla introduces them before leaving. Marlena asks him some questions to jog his memory and he tells her that he is in Salem looking for the son that he never got to know. Marlena tells him that her husband is a private investigator and offers to get his help. The man thanks her and says he needs all the help he can get.
Belle comes to the hospital and Shawn tells her that he’s coming home and looking forward to going back to work. She thinks it’s too soon but he tells her that he needs it. He agrees to go to AA with Brady and apologize to him for everything he said. He tells her that he is going to be doing therapy twice a week with Marlena and Belle reluctantly agrees to him going back to work. He agrees to take the rest of the day off and spend it with her and they make plans for their day together.
Steve meets Abe in the Square and asks how his date with Paulina went. Abe tells him that it was a disaster. Paulina goes to Jada’s room and Rafe asks what he can do for her. She tells him to stop dragging his feet and accept her job offer. Rafe tells her that he can’t do that because the policy prohibiting dating a subordinate is still in place. Paulina tells him that the city council will be voting on it but can’t say when.
Rafe tells her that he isn’t willing to come back while the policy is still in place and Paulina suggests that maybe he can break up with Jada for now. Rafe makes it clear that he isn’t willing to do that and doesn’t want to be without Jada. Paulina understands because of what she just went through with Abe but tells him that she needs a police commissioner. Paulina vents to him about her date with Abe going badly and Rafe is supportive. They talk about the job again and as Jada walks in Rafe suggests her for the job.
Abe tells Steve that Paulina told him how they started out and he doesn’t want to be with someone who is such a big liar after how much he was already lied to. Steve tells him that they got past all of that and were very happy together but Abe is doubtful. He does admit that Paulina gets to him and he doesn’t understand why. Steve thinks he is just scared.
Jada asks what’s going on and Rafe tells her that he thinks she should be the new commissioner. They argue about it until Paulina breaks in and tells them that she’s made her decision. Later Jada and Rafe are standing in his office and she tells him that Paulina made the right decision and he belongs in the chair. She tells him that she is falling in love with him too and they kiss.
Paulina runs into Abe in the Square and he asks her to start over again. She tells him that she’d like that. John and Steve are celebrating wrapping up their latest case when Marlena comes in and tells them she has a new case for them.
