Over the weekend, the soap community faced a significant loss as beloved soap opera icon Drake Hogestyn passed away at the age of 70 on September 28th, just one day shy of his 71st birthday, following a battle with pancreatic cancer. Hogestyn is celebrated among soap fans for his impressive decades-long run as John Black on Days of Our Lives.

His dynamic chemistry with Deidre Hall as Marlena Evans, affectionately referred to by fans as “Jarlena,” made waves in the community. Despite the lengthy tape-to-air schedule of Days of Our Lives, many held onto the hope that we had not yet seen Hogestyn’s final performance as John. However, Jason47, a dedicated source for Days news, confirmed that we have indeed seen Hogestyn’s final episode, which aired on September 9, 2024. His final moments were shared with Eric Martsolf (Brady) and Leo Howard (Tate) at the Townhouse, where Tate filled John in on the latest happenings with Holly and his last scene featured Brady’s return home from the Salem PD,

Drake Hogestyn joined the cast of Days of our Lives in 1986 as “The Pawn,” who was later revealed as Roman Brady. He then took on the iconic role of John Black. With over 4,000 episodes to his credit, Hogestyn has made a lasting impression in the soap community.
