Well, well, well… turns out even hip-hop royalty enjoys a little drama, but the kind that comes with commercial breaks.

On June 13, while debuting his long-anticipated visual album Victory at the Tribeca Film Festival, rap legend Slick Rick also gave fans a glimpse into his idea of a day off. Spoiler alert: it’s probably not what you’d expect from the man behind some of hip-hop’s most iconic storytelling tracks, but it includes CBS’s newest daytime drama.

During a conversation with fellow rap icon Nas at the event, the British-born, Bronx-raised MC was asked what a typical chill day looks like. Rick didn’t miss a beat:

“I’m back at the crib just chilling, watching Beyond the Gates, this new soap opera… little dip in the pool, little rhyme, scratching on the rhyme, perfecting my raps… and you know, a little weed don’t hurt, you know what I mean?”

Slick Rick Watches Beyond the Gates

That’s right—Slick Rick, the godfather of rap storytelling, is tuned in to Beyond the Gates, CBS’ newest daytime drama that premiered back in February. And honestly? It makes perfect sense. The drama in the mysterious town of Fairmont Crest would have anybody hooked. Mystery, drama, secrets, and music? We get it! After all, as a storyteller, he must know a thing or two about a plot twist.

It’s also a fitting hobby for someone who just dropped his first album in 26 years. Victory isn’t just a musical comeback—it’s a cinematic experience. Rick handled 95% of the production himself, sharing executive producer duties with Emmy-nominated actor and part-time rapper-DJ Idris Elba. Guest artists include heavyweights like Nas, Giggs, and Estelle.

So, while Rick’s days might still involve rhymes, chains, and hip-hop history, his downtime proves that even legends need to kick back. And when they do? They opt for soap operas, pool dips, and good vibes.

Victory on screen. Victory on wax. And Victory at home.
