Tanner Novlan, the actor who plays John “Finn” Finnegan, a leading man on The Bold and the Beautiful, recently spoke with Soap Opera News. In our exclusive interview, Novlan, a Canadian native who is also a model, talked about how he got into acting, his character’s popular pairing with Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood), what keeps him busy when he’s not working on the show, and so much more. Keep reading to find out more about his insights.
As we asked Novlan about his decision to pursue acting, he shared with us, “It was never on my radar growing up in a small town.” However, upon relocating, things changed for him. “When I moved to Los Angeles to get my green card, I took a [acting] class for fun, and I immediately fell in love with it.“
Quickly switching gears to focus on The Bold and the Beautiful, where Novlan is beloved as Dr. Finn. We asked him about the on-screen pairing of Finn and Steffy, also dubbed SINN. Although things weren’t going so well for the couple recently, Novlan shared that “Finn and Steffy have a deep connection. She’s the love of his life.” He also emphasized that his family is the most important thing to Finn: “His family is the most important thing to him. He will do whatever it takes to get them back.”
Curious as many viewers were, we inquired about those adlibs that Novlan recently did on the show, particularly referring to the character of Liam Spencer as “Little Puke”. Novlan notes, “There was something in the script that was similar, but in the moment, it came out. It best describes Liam and his character.“
Sheila Carter is often labeled as crazy and a threat to many by the town’s residents. However, she firmly believes that she loves her son. When asked about the complex mother-son relationship between Sheila and Finn, Novlan commented, “It’s complicated.” He went on to provide further explanation: “Finn has a curiosity about where he came from, but Sheila’s actions have pushed him away. Sheila desperately wants to be loved, and because of her genetic connection to Finn, she thinks he loves her the same way. But Finn would never risk the safety of his family, and Sheila is a danger.”
We also discussed the show’s expansion of Finn’s family with his cousin Luna (Lisa Yamada) and his aunt Penelope (Romy Park), also known as Poppy. “It’s really exciting to dive in and learn more about Finn and his background. It will create more storylines that Finn will be a part of, and I’m looking forward to exploring that.”
If given the chance to write his dream storyline, Novlan quickly said, “Evil Twin.” And if he could play another character, he revealed it would be “Charlie. He gets to come in and give a lot of much-needed comedic relief!“
Without giving away too much about what’s to come, Novlan teased, “It’s going to be wild. SINN fans will have to be on high alert with Liam’s constant attempts to manipulate Steffy to get her back.“
We also talked about Liberty Mutual commercials. “It’s the best,” he said, adding, “I have so much fun playing that character, and working with David Hoffman, who plays Doug, was a treat. We had great improv chemistry.“
Novlan has two young children that he loves dearly. He is happy that he can be there for them while balancing his work-life balance. “I am lucky to be able to work close to my home on B&B. I can see them [my children] in the morning and pick them up from school. They grow up so fast that it’s important to be around for even the little things. They’re ages 1 and 4, so we have sorts of silly games we play. My daughter likes to dress up and reenact her favorite movies. My son loves to play with his little hockey stick and kick around a ball.”
