Another week, another great episode of Soapy! This week, Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart welcomed two of Budig’s co-stars from The Bold and the Beautiful, Heather Tom and Lawrence Saint-Victor, who share their respective multi-faceted journeys on the sudser.
Saint-Victor pulls double duty, portraying the show’s legal eagle, Carter Walton, and he also writes for the show. Tom pulls a trifecta, playing Katie Logan, an executive at Forrester Creations, while also writing and directing behind the camera.
Saint-Victor developed an interest in writing when he was on Guiding Light (Remy). He talked about his interest in his first meeting with Bold’s Executive Producer and Head Writer, Bradley Bell, before he joined Bold in 2013. Saint-Victor wrote his first script in 2014.
His writing for the show was more sporadic initially. Since 2021, he has written more consistently, and in the last several weeks, he has been writing more than he ever has. In addition, Saint-Victor mentions his desire to add directing to his growing list of creative art forms.
Tom has been in daytime for over 35 years (The Young and the Restless, One Life to Live). She joined Bold in 2007. Tom has been directing for almost seven years, at Bold and in primetime. In relation to writing for the show, she wrote a spec script at first. And now she, like Saint-Victor, is in the “rotation” of writers.
Heather Tom Pulls a Trifecta
Tissues came out when Tom got emotional talking about her groundbreaking celebration for her 35th year milestone in daytime this year. Bell brilliantly came up with the idea of having Tom write, direct, and act in the same episode (which had never been done before in daytime) with an all-female cast and timed it to Women’s History Month.
“I feel like this genre has given me so much…It’s been my home for most of my life. It’s given me the life I have. To be able to do this thing that hasn’t been done before and to have Brad give me this opportunity, I was just really, really grateful.”
Lawrence Saint-Victor on B&B Role
Another standout moment was when Saint-Victor gave his perspective on playing a “fringe character” with no family ties on set.
“When you are not connected to a family, you have to build those relationships yourself. It is not given. I think Thorsten (Thorsten Kaye, Ridge) and I were playing with our banter, and that is what turned Ridge and Carter into best friends…It all comes out in how I build relationships, even if the scene doesn’t call for it.”
One of the best things about Soapy is learning fun facts about our favorite actors. Somebody needs to create a trivia game based on these episodes. Below is our own short one from this episode.
- Who always loses their phone on set?
- Who once had a blind date with their cousin?
- What storyline caused Saint-Victor to, for the first time ever in his daytime career, start bringing his script to set?
- If Tom wasn’t working in daytime, what does she think she’d be doing?
