If you have spent any time in Genoa City over the last three decades, you know Joshua Morrow as the steady, ever-loving heart of the Newman family. But it turns out, the man behind Nick Newman has a few stories fans may not know, including a gold-certified past in Canada and a failed $20,000 bribe involving his son.
During a recent sit-down on the Soapy podcast with Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart, Joshua got real about his 33-year run on The Young and the Restless and the next chapter in his family’s story.
The $20,000 “Nah”
The biggest update in the Morrow household right now is his son, Crew Morrow, following in his footsteps. Crew currently plays Will Spencer on The Bold and the Beautiful. But if Joshua had it his way, things might have looked very different.
Crew was a standout lacrosse player with serious potential.
“He was a lacrosse superstar,” his dad recall. “He could have played anywhere in the country if he wanted to. Any school would have been like, ‘Yes.’ And that was my dream for him. You know, him sitting at a table and picking his school, and me flying on the weekends to go and watch him play this game.”
Joshua even admitted he tried to sweeten the deal.
“I offered him $20,000 to play lacrosse at Oregon because he was like, ‘Maybe not.’ I go, ‘I’ll give you $20,000 because this is for me,’” he said, laughing.
Crew’s response? A simple no. Instead, he told his dad he wanted to act. Joshua warned him it would not be easy, but he clearly supports him all the way.
A Boy Band Past You Didn’t See Coming
Long before his daytime TV fame, Joshua was part of a Canadian boy band called 3D alongside actor Eddie Cibrian. And yes, it was a real thing.
The group even opened for Destiny’s Child during the 1999 into 2000 New Year’s Eve millennium show.
“Destiny’s Child hasn’t come calling,” Joshua joked about a reunion.
The Newman Legacy Lives On
After 33 years on The Young and the Restless, Joshua has become a cornerstone of the show. He credits his longevity to the legends who came before him, including Jeanne Cooper (Katherine), Peter Bergman (Jack), and Eric Braeden (Victor).
He even shared a funny behind-the-scenes moment about Eric Braeden struggling to keep it together over a line about a character named Sage (played by Kelly Sullivan).
“There’s no more entertaining or beautiful thing than when Eric Braeden specifically cannot keep it together,” he said.
With Crew working just down the hall at The Bold and the Beautiful, Joshua has passed along one rule that matters most. This is before the show moved to another studio.
“The first day you’re there, you walk up, you introduce yourself to every crew member and learn their names. That’s all I care about. And you show up on time.”
Whether he is playing Nick Newman, talking about his past, or supporting his son’s future, Joshua Morrow still comes across as one of the most grounded guys in the business. And while that $20,000 bribe did not work, it is clear the Morrow legacy is in very good hands.
All hail Crew!
