After nearly, 21 years, Kelly Monaco is leaving General Hospital and the role of Sam McCall.
The news of Monaco’s departure was revealed to Soap Opera News earlier today, with a source confirming that her character is being killed off. Now in an exclusive report by Soap Opera Network, the outlet states, “According to sources, the Sam McCall character is being killed off and will last appear in Port Charles this fall. Sources also say that Monaco was “blindsided” upon learning of the decision.”
Before assuming the role of Sam and originating it in October 2003, Monaco portrayed two characters on the ABC soap opera Port Charles: Olivia “Livvie” Locke Morley and Tess Ramsey.
Following the conclusion of Port Charles, she made her debut on General Hospital. Monaco’s exceptional performance led to a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role on Port Charles in 2003 and in 2006, she received another Daytime Emmy nomination, this time for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Sam McCall on General Hospital.
During her tenure, Kelly Monaco was temporarily replaced by soap opera veteran Lindsay Hartley several times, most recently in last week’s episode, but by Monday’s episode, Monaco was back in the role of Sam.
