In the latest episode of State of Mind, Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos on General Hospital) sits down with his longtime colleague, Laura Wright, who plays Carly Spencer. The two actors dive into an emotional, honest, and often humorous conversation that fans won’t want to miss.
After the warm introductions, Wright opened up about a very personal topic—her daughter’s diagnosis with type 1 diabetes. She shared her deep gratitude for fellow GH star Finola Hughes, who happened to be in London at the same time as her daughter and played a key role in helping her get diagnosed.
Wright also gave viewers a glimpse into her early days, revealing she once juggled four jobs—including working at a gas station and managing a tanning salon—before landing her big break. She spoke about auditioning for Loving, and later, how she landed the role of Carly on General Hospital.
Maurice and Laura had some fun reminiscing about their first meeting. They joked that he “wasn’t feeling well” the day Laura first tried to strike up a conversation with him, and hinted that he wasn’t exactly ready to accept someone new in the role of Carly.
Turning Down the General Hospital Role
Laura also revealed something surprising: she initially turned down the offer to join GH. At the time, she was still playing Cassie Winslow on Guiding Light and even entered negotiations to stay. Why did she turn down the job? She admits, “I was terrified to move out to California.”
She explained that she loved her time on Guiding Light, the friends she made, the experience, but the negotiations didn’t go her way. “One of the big things I asked for was to not have my contract with Guiding Light, but to have it with Procter & Gamble, so that if Guiding Light was canceled, I could move over to As the World Turns,” she said. “They said no to every single thing I asked for.”
Then, in a twist of fate, just 10 minutes after her agent told her that everything she asked for was turned down, Jill Farren Phelps called. Phelps told her that the writers want her and asked if there was anything they could do. Wright admits she immediately told Phelps she wanted the job at General Hospital.
Wright also touched on her Sacred Space Zoom sessions, a personal project where she connects deeply with others through shared stories and healing conversations.
